technotrans supplies battery cooling for regional trains and hybrid locomotives

Thursday 26. August 2021 - technotrans SE has been awarded two follow-up contracts in the area of electrified rail transport. The Sassenberg-based thermal management specialist is supplying more than 100 battery cooling systems with a seven-figure order volume to two well-known battery manufacturers.

The energy-efficient devices will be used in electric regional trains in Italy and in shunting hybrid locomotives. In both cases, these are customised solutions that are precisely tailored to the respective application. The delivery of the battery cooling systems will take place from the end of 2021 directly following the orders already in progress from both customers.
“With these follow-up orders, we are underpinning our technological leadership claim in the field of rail transport battery systems. At the same time, the continuation of the collaboration demonstrates the reliability and efficiency of our tried-and-tested thermal management solutions,” says Michael Finger, Spokesman of the Board of Management of technotrans SE. The E-Mobility segment is part of the focus market of Energy Management, which technotrans is steadily expanding as part of its corporate strategy “Future Ready 2025”. Battery cooling systems for rail transport play a key role for the technology company in this segment.
Follow-up orders worth millions
In the first follow-up order, technotrans is supplying 82 cooling units for use in regional trains in Italy over a period of around one year. The battery manufacturer had previously invested in 60 identical systems from technotrans. These are customised versions of mobile battery cooling units, which are notable above all for their compact design, precise temperature control and high energy efficiency. One regional train will be equipped with two technotrans systems each.
The second follow-up order from a battery manufacturer for shunting hybrid locomotives comprises a delivery of 29 units as a customised variant. Delivery will take place in the course of 2022. So far, the customer has purchased 21 of the high-tech cooling systems.
Both project partners have already signalled interest in continuing the successful cooperation and have specifically held out the prospect of further orders for the period after 2022. “One of the decisive reasons for the success in the growing rail segment is our distinctive solution competence and flexibility. This enables us to optimally adapt our products to the customers’ systems – even with the most complex requirement profiles,” emphasises Michael Finger. “In addition, we have high production capacities and fast reaction times to handle such extensive orders within short periods of time.”
