Package Printing Seminar: Muller Martini Presents Latest Innovations and Exciting System Solutions for Package Printing

Thursday 29. November 2012 - Interest in web offset printing is increasing in the packaging industry. Muller Martini demonstrated how the packaging industry can take advantage of its many innovations during a seminar at its Training Center Presses in Maulburg, Germany on November 20 and 21.

The expert instructors presented various competitive advantages to over 100 participants, ranging from data preparation and modern thermosetting ink technologies to VSOP and Alprinta printing press technology.
The seminar was opened with a talk by one of the over 100 participants. Alberto Maria Cavalli, Managing Director of Constantia Novis in Romania, recounted his positive experiences with an Alprinta 74 V that was put into operation three years ago. As a market leader for web offset printing presses in the packaging industry, Muller Martini impresses with its diverse range of applications, offering support not only as a machine manufacturer but also in applications technology. “Paper labels are less and less in demand today, which is why we needed to find a new strategic goal,” said Alberto Maria Cavalli. “The market for film labels continues to grow steadily, and we wanted to remain flexible. The Alprinta 74 V allowed us to significantly increase our competences and range of products.” Today, Constantia Novis produces labels for various types of packaging, mostly for the beer and beverage industry.
The seminar featured presentations held by acknowledged specialists from longstanding partner companies. They talked about issues such as data handling and printing plate manufacture with CTP (Computer To Plate), working with proven ink systems in the food industry, the use of various materials as well as the manifold areas of production with the stepless, variable size web offset printing technology. The participants were impressed by the fact that polyethylene could be printed on using a web offset printing press, offering them a new area of application for this technology.
Another important reason why the large number of seminar participants visited Maulburg was to see the live presentations of both the VSOP and Alprinta V web offset printing presses, featuring challenging jobs for the packaging industry such as printing on substrates like PE (polyethylene), OPP (oriented polypropylene) and PET (polyethylenterephthalat) as well as quick changeovers from one job to the next. The advantages of this technology were also showcased, including the extremely cost-efficient offset printing plates, the hybrid technology in connection with flexo printing, high printing quality and quick changeovers.
The market for the package printing industry continues to grow, which is reason enough for many graphic arts companies to expand their range of products by offering printing for flexible packaging, labels and cardboard. According to a market study by PIRA International, the global turnover rate for the packaging industry is expected to increase by nearly 23 percent by 2016, from approximately 670 billion USD to 820 billion USD.
