PrintStars 2012: drupa report no. 4 receives silver award

Monday 05. November 2012 - This is the 10th time that Messe Düsseldorf has reason to be pleased after receiving an award for its drupa report: the 2012 edition of this official drupa publication has been given the silver PrintStar 2012 in the category of Customer and Staff Magazines/FCP. The Innovation Prize of the German Printing Industry, which is awarded by Verlag Deutscher Drucker (German Printers' Publishers), covers 19 different categories and eight special prizes for the best printed products and their producers. With over 900 companies participating from the industry and after receiving nearly 400 submissions, this was a new record. The patron is Dr. Philipp Rösler, Member of the German Parliament and Federal Minister for Economics and Technology.

“drupa is the most important printing trade fair in the world. This is why drupa report pulled out all the stops,” said the jury when it gave its reasons for awarding the Innovation Prize to drupa report no. 4. Another point that impressed the jury was “the highly attractive product design and also a very clear focus on the target group.”
Manuel Mataré, drupa’s Director, is very pleased: “We are proud to have received so much recognition for our flagship. The drupa report continually succeeds in presenting its focal areas at a high level of professional quality, in a visually appealing style and, above all, in a manner that is always perceived as surprising. It genuinely gives readers a tangible understanding of the unique qualities of the printed medium within the marketing mix.”
The focal area of drupa report no. 4, both in content and in its production technology, was packaging. The publication had a print run of 13,000 in February 2012. Consequently, the 72-page edition was for the first time sent out in a specially created mailing pouch, using double-sided printed cardboard with a complex folding technique and sophisticated design. Also, 5,000 copies were specially customised for shipping purposes. The content concentrated on the same focal area – packaging – in all its uses, both through a visual appeal and through the element of touch. This was done through typography and a sophisticated printing technique. As well as enhancing the product through relief embossing, hot foil lamination and the use of special colours, a major role was given to paper again. Eight different types of paper were used, including beer paper and black board coated with synthetic fibre. As a special feature, drupa report made more use of QR and AR applications again this time, thus combining print, web and mobile media.
The design for drupa report no. 4 was created by Giffhorn Design in Wuppertal. Printing, further processing and finishing were handled by the printing studio in Düsseldorf. Another finishing company was Manufaktur Lappe from Neuss. The bookbinding was the responsibility of Buchbinderei Siemons in Aachen. The realisation of drupa report no. 4 was supported by two sponsors: Papier Union GmbH and Leonhard Kurz Stiftung & Co. KG.
The next drupa report is due to be published in autumn 2013.
