Postmedia Network Awards 2012 Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism to Natalie Stechyson
Wednesday 15. August 2012 - Postmedia Network is pleased to announce that Natalie Stechyson is the recipient of the 2012 Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism.
A recent graduate from Carleton University with a Master of Journalism, Natalie is the third recipient of this prestigious fellowship which began in 2010. Natalie’s previous experience includes reporting and editing roles at Postmedia News, The Globe and Mail and The Telegraph-Journal (New Brunswick).
“At the Calgary Herald we are delighted to recognize and celebrate Michelle Lang’s passion for reporting through this annual Fellowship,” said Lorne Motley, Editor-in-Chief, Calgary Herald. “The Fellowship attracts the highest calibre of graduates and identifies promising journalistic talent such as Natalie. We look forward to Natalie starting the fellowship in September.”
Michelle Lang, an award-winning Calgary Herald journalist, lost her life in December 2009 while on assignment for Canwest News Service in Kandahar, Afghanistan. She was the first Canadian journalist killed while reporting on this war.
“I’m thrilled to have been chosen as the recipient of this very prestigious fellowship,” said Natalie Stechyson. “The opportunity to pursue a special project is a reporter’s dream and to do it while honouring the memory of Michelle Lang is truly inspiring.”
The Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism is a national program designed to encourage a recent Canadian university graduate, from any discipline, to apply his or her passion for writing and interest in current events. The Fellowship includes a salary for the year, plus funding for a special project, as chosen by the fellow, on a topic of social significance inspired by Michelle’s own portfolio of work. Funding for the Fellowship is provided by the Calgary Herald and Postmedia News, as well as the Michelle Lang Trust, with the Fellow’s special project funded exclusively by the Michelle Lang Trust.
