At its 2011 National Dealer Meeting, Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America (SIICA), a division of Sharp Electronics Corporation, has announced that it is taking MFP security to new levels by making both data encryption and overwrite features standard on the company’s latest MX color series MFPs. For additional security, the company is also adding password lock and introducing an “End of Lease” option that deletes all data on a leased machine before it is returned. Data that resides on copiers that have been re-sold after lease has been identified as a major privacy and security threat.
“Sharp has always been a pioneer in data security for MFPs,” said Mike Marusic, vice president of marketing, Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America. “We were the first to introduce an MFP security toolkit and we raised awareness of security issues more than 2 years before anyone else in the industry. Now we offer among the most comprehensive sets of security features on the market today.”
A new standard security mode for all Sharp MFPs will enable password lock and the same 256-bit (AES) data encryption of job data which has been adopted by the U.S. government. Sharp is also making robust overwrite protection (up to 7x) standard, which thoroughly erases temporary memory on the hard drive after every job. This will help protect users from even the most sophisticated threats. Since the data on MFPs is most vulnerable when the machine is being replaced, Sharp is offering an “End of Lease” feature which erases all images, address book entries, documents, files and faxes on demand upon lease return.
These new security features complement the existing suite of standard security tools that Sharp offers, such as active directory-based authentication, port management and confidential print. All Sharp MFPs also offer IP/MAC address filtering, SSL Encryption, and IPsec (IP Security) protection, as well as local and network user authentication to ensure that only authorized personnel have access to the devices.
