Bernhard Schreier presents Gomer Press with colour certification

Monday 14. February 2011 - Heidelberg chief executive Bernhard Schreier has presented a Heidelberg ISO 12647-2 certificate to Welsh printer and publisher Gomer Press, confirmation that the company is working to top colour quality standards.

Jonathan Lewis, managing director of Gomer Press, says: “We are handling more and more high quality work and we wanted to ensure we can maintain the best colour standards across all our work and have the evidence to prove that we do just that.”
The company produces a range of books and commercial print, including work for the most quality conscious art galleries in London where accurate picture replication is critical. As the largest publisher in Wales producing 120 new titles a year, Gomer Press produces books of all types, including poetry, novels, coffee table and children’s publications.
Gomer elected to take the Heidelberg colour certification route because they are a Heidelberg house (they run a Topsetter CtP device, Speedmaster XL 105-4+L, two B1 Stahlfolders and a Stitchmaster ST 400) and have faith in the expertise and training/demonstration skills of the company.
“The consultancy and implementation found that we already had good quality but there was the odd tweak here and there to get us to a point where we could be confidently and consistently produce optimum colour. The biggest change of all has been documenting what we are doing,” says Mr Lewis.
Although the time from initial meeting to certification was about three months the actual time spent by Heidelberg staff in prepress and press areas was a matter of days and disruption to normal production was minimal. Sheets had to be sent to Germany where they were measured and assessed. Only if work is up to the standard can ISO 12647-2 certification be awarded by Heidelberg.
Jonathan Lewis and his father John Lewis were very pleased to be presented with the certificate by Bernhard Schreier, Heidelberg’s chief executive, who was accompanied by southern divisional director Andy Rae. Gomer Press has been in family hands since 1892.
The ISO 12647 certificate can be seen in the company’s reception area and the achievement is being promoted through Gomer’s customer newsletter and by word of mouth.
In addition to B1 production Gomer Press has smaller presses and as well as cut-fold-stitch it can also offer limp bound and hardback book binding services on its modern Kolbus equipment.
