Emmersons invests in B2 press to snap at the heels of the B1 sector

Tuesday 25. January 2011 - Warwickshire printer Emmersons is making a two for one B2 press change and making its first foray into double day shifts. This is a press investment that is self-funded from a family company which owns its own building and all its assets.

A Speedmaster XL 75-5+L, a five-colour with coater, will be installed in this month and comes equipped with the Axis Control spectrophotometer. It will move straight into double day shift operation with the addition of 5am to 10pm cover.
John Emmerson, joint managing director with his brother Jamie, says: “”This is the first time we have bought a new press but the productivity of the XL 75 is second to none and just having this model will generate interest and leads. The running speed is faster and having the two way link between press and CtP/repro will be better for colour management and colour reports, helping us to run to the IS0 12647 standard. We believe it will enable us to encroach into the B1 market.”
Emmersons is selling two SM 74 five-colour presses but retains a SM74-6P and an SM 74-2P to run alongside the new press, providing high quality spot colour capability for a company that likes to handle challenging work in this area and giving it a multi-colour solution where necessary.
Emmersons have specified a coating facility on their new press. This will give the company faster turnround times but it also wants to experiment with different coating options to see what additional services it could effectively offer its customers. It has built a reputation for being consultative.
“Our reputation is for being flexible, friendly and focused,” says John Emmerson. “We are often asked to troubleshoot for our clients to find ways of giving them the best value for money and even better quality. For a number of agencies and key print buyers we are their exclusive printer and they have 24/7 access to the two directors. Our whole ethos in the company is that we do whatever the client needs to be done. That won’t change. We will keep our eye for detail whilst running this highly productive press.”
It is this approach which has enabled Emmersons to generate sales of £2.6m with a 24 staff company, attracting work from a range of sectors including fashion, agriculture and education. With the new press the company is well positioned to top the £3m sales level although the management focus remains on customer service and profitability.
John and Jamie are the second generation to run the company and have been at the helm for ten years. The business was set up in 1981 by their father.
