Girne Grafik orders new Goss Community SSC press for efficiency and expansion plans

Thursday 13. January 2011 - Cypriot publisher anticipates dramatic waste reductions; New press will ensure strong position in publishing market

GIRNE GRAFIK of Cyprus has ordered a Goss Community SSC press to fulfill a new print contract as well as for production of its own title Çivi. The press will be installed in a new building in Lefkosa (Nicosia), replacing an ageing second-hand press with limited color capacity.
The new Community SSC press for Girne Grafik will have four four-high towers and a Goss N40 folder with quarterfold capability. The press has been specified with a 560 mm cut-off in common with most newspaper presses in Turkey, and will accommodate web widths of up to 889 mm. The configuration has been devised to provide maximum flexibility by the most cost-effective method. Among other features, Goss International has sourced three zero-speed splicers with dual unwind facility, enabling Girne Grafik to run two separate webs into the press from each reelstand. It will be capable of outputting a 32-page full-color tabloid or a 48-page tabloid comprising 16 pages in full-color and 32 pages of spot color.
“The flexibility, simplicity and modularity of the Community SSC design were fundamental to our choice of press,” explains Orhan Akyuz, production director of Girne Grafik. “We want the quickest start-up possible, an efficient, low-waste system and a straightforward path to expansion. This specialized configuration ensures that we will be able to take on new work without any significant adjustments or compromise to current production.”
Jointly owned by managing director Unal Aydogan and chairman Faruk Gencer, Girne Grafik launched its own title, Çivi, two years ago, conceived as a barometer of public opinion. Averaging 24 pages, the paper covers a mixture of key topics including politics, economics, and leisure but claims no affiliations to any political ideologies or parties. The company also prints the daily Turkish titles, Havadis and Star Kibris for distribution in Cyprus.
According to Faruk Gencer, the Goss brand is central to the company’s plans to develop its production portfolio, “As well as Greek and Turkish newspapers, many foreign titles are flown in every day to Cyprus to cater to tourist and expatriate communities. We have an opportunity to develop our business by alleviating their distribution difficulties, but to do this we needed a brand name and manufacturer that our potential customers know and trust. Goss International meets all of these requirements.”
Continuing hopes for an eventual reunification of Cyprus and the TCC (Turkish Cypriot Community) also offer potential for the future and provide Girne Grafik with added incentive to ensure a strong position in the Cypriot market.
With its strategy underway, Girne Grafik requires its new press in the shortest timeframe possible. The four-tower Community SSC press will be manufactured and assembled in just twenty weeks and installation is scheduled for May 2011.
