Momentive Launches New Silane System for Enhancing Service Life of Plastic Pipes Used in Plumbing, Heating, Drinking Water Installations

Thursday 28. October 2010 - Momentive Performance Materials, a global leader in specialty chemicals and materials, has introduced a two-component system that can help improve the mechanical properties and service life of crosslinked polyethylene (PE-X) potable water pipes used for plumbing, heating and drinking water.

When used in the manufacture of PE-X pipes through a one- or two-step process, the Silox* 23 silane and PEarlstab* Y-15760 masterbatch system is an excellent candidate to consider for boosting chlorine resistance while minimally affecting the odor and taste of drinking water.

Silox 23 silane is a liquid additive typically used for crosslinking high and medium density polyethylene for potable water pipe. It can be considered for other low-odor applications. Crosslinker Silox silane must be used in combination with a catalyst and antioxidant such as PEarlstab Y-15760 masterbatch. Available in solid pellet, but free-flowing form, PEarlstab masterbatch generally strengthens chlorine resistance. When used together, as a system, Silox 23 silane and PEarlstab Y-15760 masterbatch can deliver performance equal to or better than silane and peroxide combinations, providing PE-X pipe manufacturers with a highly effective alternative.

“Momentive’s two-component system can help enhance the performance of PE-X piping used widely by homebuilders in Europe and the U.S.,” said Kevin Shikoluk, Global Marketing Director, Momentive Performance Materials. “Our tests demonstrate that the new system can enable longer use life in chlorinated water.”

For optimum cost-effectiveness, the Silox 23 silane and PEarlstab Y-15760 masterbatch system can also be used for crosslinking LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE and HDPE polyethylene.
