The 80 participants at PraxisDialog on 23rd September 2010 received extensive information from the packaging printing sector: speeches and practical examples from the areas of design, prepress and printing, plus materials logistics and finishing, focused on differentiation from the competition, ways to increase economic efficiency, and new technologies.
Well thought-out from the very beginning: full integration of all involved in the process is an important factor in folding carton production. IT systems support professionally integrated workflows. Frank Bucher from ESKO Artwork explained the advantages of producing three-dimensional packaging in a coordinated prepress process. This eliminates isolated applications, and the information exchange is shortened and structured.
In packaging printing, enhancement is not a luxury these days but standard. Olga Martin and Eva Paul from manroland illustrated how print enhancement makes a product distinctive – coating effects, double coating effects, cold foiling or inline embossing: the appropriate press configuration avoids separate production steps and enhances the print product in one pass through the press. Christoph Weinert from papyrus explained important aspects of substrate selection in folding carton production. Packaging designer Silvia Henze from pack+print reported on the balancing act between customer wishes and feasibility.
System integration and creativity
Why do many packaging printers swear by logistics systems? Because the extremely thick substrates make press feeders and deliveries a hive of activity. Logistics systems relieve the strain on the printers and boost production efficiency. Markus Wenz from manroland presented different solutions from among the more than 270 installations of the AUPASYS logistics system worldwide. Sandro Gubinelli from Bobst showed why finishing already starts with packaging design. This is because helpful basic rules in graphic design of a folding carton ensure a trouble-free finishing process. The plasma treatment developed by Bobst provides valuable support here through an innovative surface treatment. Holger Bippus from A&R Carton presented folding cartons that are exemplary in shape, enhancement and finishing. The event wound up by producing the highly-enhanced folding carton of a PrintCity workgroup in one pass on a ROLAND 500. Print samples are available from praxisdialog@manroland.com.
