The Commercial Appeal, Memphis upgrade their press controls with Harland Simon
Friday 24. September 2010 - Harland Simon continues their success in 2010, this time in Memphis, TN. The Commercial Appeal has selected Harland Simon to upgrade their press control systems.
The last time Harland Simon was on site at Memphis they upgraded their obsolete drive system with off-the-shelf Siemens DC drives [an upgrade program that started in 2005] in 2007, Harland Simon converted the remaining drives on their last two presses of their four press facility.
The latest upgrade will replace all console, maintenance and Prima MS/RIPSet PCs with the latest Dell hardware running Windows 7 OS. In addition, the press controls will be updated to the latest version of PressNet, incorporating the latest widescreen technology (see insert.) Harland Simon will also cater for a web width reduction to 46 and replacing all controls console tops [lay down and touch screens] with a wide screen version of the popular P6000 control desk.
At all times, the existing system will remain operational until the new system is fully tested and installed. The solution is based on techniques that have been successfully developed for the upgrade of press control systems on multiple press types over the past 20 years. The motivation to convert was to update aging PC hardware and take advantage of Harland Simons latest controls and diagnostic capabilities.
John Staiano, Senior Vice President for Harland Simon, commented, “We are extremely pleased The Commercial Appeal has, once again, selected Harland Simon to fulfill their control and quality needs.”
This desk top upgrade process has recently been completed at The Orange County Register, CA where, as above, production was unaffected by the conversion.
