Allen Press Adopts Quark XML Author to Further Automate the Publishing of Scholarly Journals
Wednesday 15. September 2010 - Innovative Publishing Solutions Provider Uses Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word to Process Content and Expedite the Publication of Scholarly Articles to Multiple Media
Quark Inc. announced today that Allen Press (www.allenpress.com ), a leader in print and publishing services for scholarly and special-interest publishers, has chosen to integrate Quark XML Author into its publishing workflow in order to further automate its publishing processes and create competitive advantages for its publishers. Quark XML Author is an XML authoring and editing add-in to Microsoft Word that allows anyone using Microsoft Word to~ create or edit XML content. Allen Press, founded in 1935, serves 300 publishers and produces more than 400 publications. To manage its large volume of content with varying workflows and output requirements, Allen Press uses XML as a means to create content in a single standardised source that can be reviewed easily and published automatically to multiple types of media.
The XML schema used by Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word complies with the Journal Archiving Tag Set dictated by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The Journal Archiving Tag Set specifies the tagging and structure of content and metadata for journal articles, including research and non-research articles, letters, editorials, and book and product reviews. XML tagging regularises the NLMs archiving process, improves information retrieval, and optimises print and web production of the material.
“XML Author for Microsoft Word has helped streamline our overall publishing workflows. We are more efficient internally because our skilled typesetters can focus on their specific expertise while editors and proofers can make edits throughout the review process,” said Rick Moore, Director of Content Management Services, of Allen Press. “The benefits extend to our network of publishers because we can offer them shorter turnaround times. Faster time-to-publish is an important competitive advantage to our scholarly and special-interest publishers.”
Allen Press easily integrated Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word into its publishing workflow, which includes other XML infrastructure, to enable its staff to author and edit XML structured content without having to learn complex XML syntax. Because Allen Press already relied on Microsoft Word as an authoring and editing environment, it was a natural fit. With Quark XML Author, Allen Press is able to:
Help clients comply with industry requirements for XML tagging
Streamline external review and internal publishing processes
Liberate technical typesetters to focus on complex jobs
Relieve editors, writers, and proof readers from worrying about formatting so they can focus on content
Edit a single source of content in XML and publish automatically to the Web
Improve customer satisfaction by providing quicker time to publish
Moore continued, “We believe workflows based on XML are the best solutions for our publishing customers and we chose Quark XML Author because it eased the adoption of XML editing within our organisation. With a user environment that is so familiar – Microsoft Word – it is easy for our staff to edit and correct a single source of content and publish it across all types of media according to each of our publishers requirements.”
Laurent Ruben, Director of Sales for Quark said, “With Quark XML Author, Allen Press was able to improve their existing publishing process by allowing copy editors and proofers to edit and make corrections to XML right from their desktop. Their single source publishing workflows based on XML help their clients publish more quickly and in compliance with important standards within their industry.”
