Mohawk Show 11 Finalist: “No-Mo Video”

Friday 10. September 2010 - How did Julian Gosper, Spoken Design’s, Communication and Interaction Designer take on the challenge of creating an exhibition brochure to work in harmony with Stan Denniston’s latest video project, No-Mo Video? "In translating No-Mo Video into a publication, we referenced the original viewing experience of the works in the exhibition by repeating several images from each loop… each image a subtle or emphasized variation," said Gosper.

“The simple layout concept of placing each variation on its own right-hand page connected the publication back to the time-bound video medium.”

No-Mo Video, is Denniston’s latest exhibition. A photographer, Denniston has been exhibiting his work throughout Canada since 1978. His work, often revolves around themes of travel, memory, and representation, and very rarely stands alone. His photographs are often paired together or accompanied by text or other artistic mediums. This latest exhibition, No-Mo Video, includes a series of video “stills” — seemingly motionless video loops — that at first seem to be frozen moments in time, photographs.

The paper for the Mohawk Show 11 Finalist No-Mo Video exhibition brochure, was key in creating an experience similar to the live viewing. “The soft digital grain of the images inspired my decision to use Mohawk Superfine Eggshell throughout,” said Gosper. “It felt intuitive to explore a felt, vellum or some kind of laid stock that would activate or energize the texture in the video stills. Additionally, I needed a stock that could carry large fields of blue sky and the intense solid primaries of the sirens. After some side by side comparisons, Superfine Eggshell was clearly the best choice for the publication in terms of its tactility and its ability to reproduce smooth floods of color.”
