PICT a winner in London to Cambridge cycle ride
Monday 02. August 2010 - Malcolm Lane-Ley and a team of cyclists from PaperCo and Howard Smith Paper Group have raised over £4,500 for the Paper Industry Charitable Trust (PICT) and Breakthrough Breast Cancer after completing a strenuous 60 mile cycle between London and Cambridge.
Malcolm Lane-Ley is President of PICT. It is a role that complements both companies corporate responsibility stance. PICT has played a role in providing assistance to members and their families in times of special need for many years and is now expanding its remit to include support for educational ventures linked to the trade and schools. As the organiser of the bike ride was promoting Breakthrough Breast Cancer it was deemed fair to split the money raised 50-50 between the charities.
Malcolm Lane-Ley says: “I decided to continue the tradition of a sporting themed fundraising event but not being built for marathons (except eating them) I decided a cycling event was more fitting. A few other victims, er volunteers, were required and in no time colleagues David Darwood (Precision Publishing) along with Robin and Ben Watkinson (WebCo) were signed up.”
The cycle started at 8.30am with 4,500 riders sent off at timed intervals. Despite initial congestion the pace soon settled down and the atmosphere and event which took place in splendid sunshine with a refreshing wind carried the intrepid crew along and through the finishing line at 4pm.
“As we got to the final ten miles the tiredness was evident but the camaraderie and adrenaline carried us along. Thankfully the final stages were nice flat roads and the ride to the finishing line was a little easier on the legs, The feeling going across the finishing line was fantastic. We had achieved our goal and had averaged 12mph in the saddle, excluding resting time. I quite fancy doing it again.”
Of the money raised £1,000 was from individual staff donations and the rest from support within the trade. It is not too late to boost the total by e-mail Martin Webster, head of marketing services at Howard Smith – mwebster@groupresource.co.uk
