Two new iPad Digital Magazine titles launched, powered by WoodWing Software

Monday 07. June 2010 - The Japanese Mainichi Newspaper Company, and the Australian publisher ACP launched their first iPad Apps in sync with Apple's worldwide iPad release on May 28.

WoodWing Software, a leading supplier of innovative cross-media publishing solutions, today announced that two publishers have launched their first Digital Magazine issues on the iPad, using WoodWing’s cross-media publishing system together with the recently launched Digital Magazine Tools.

The Australian publisher ACP launched “APC,” an influential monthly computer magazine, on the iPad. In Japan, publishing giant The Mainichi Newspaper Company has launched a brand new photography magazine called “photoJ.”.

“We’re very happy with the launch of these new iPad titles,” said Remco Koster, Managing Director of WoodWing Software. “Now that Apple ‘s tablet has become available in the Asia Pacific region, many renowned publishing houses want a presence on the iPad as soon as possible. There is a big advantage in being in the iPad App Store early, as competition is still relatively low. We’ve proven that every publisher can be there, today.”

WoodWing’s Digital Magazine Tools for iPad are an extension of WoodWing’s Enterprise cross-media publishing system for print, online and mobile media channels. Unlike other systems that require the print publication to be finished before it can be shipped off to a conversion or editing tool, the Digital Magazine Tools enable publishers to create content in tandem with their print publications, using the same software, skills and staff.

“I was surprised with how easily we were able to integrate the WoodWing technology into our existing magazine production processes and workflow,” said Tony Sarno, Managing Editor at ACP. “By avoiding the development, debugging and testing that comes with unproven iPad production platforms, we were able to easily beat our competitors to the App Store.”

The Mainichi Newspaper Company is being assisted by Visual Processing Japan. APC is being handled by Plug & Play Technology in Australia. Both companies are WoodWing Gold Authorized Solution Partners.

The iPad becomes an essential channel for publishers and marketers
Apple has already sold more than 2 million iPad devices worldwide, making it an indispensable new publishing channel. For the first time, publishers can deliver a reading experience of the same level as in print – or even exceed it – on a true mobile device. A Digital Magazine on the iPad is the perfect line extension for any established publishing brand. The iPad is the gateway for new target groups and opens new opportunities for the ad business.

A Digital Magazine for the iPad will be valued by the readers. A study conducted by comScore found that 68% of 25-34-year-olds and 59% of 35-44-year-olds say they are willing to pay for newspapers and magazines specially formatted for e-readers.
