ROSPA GOLD MARKS FIVE YEARS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY EXCELLENCE AT UPM TILHILL
Monday 24. May 2010 - UPM Tilhill is celebrating winning a special medal from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents after achieving gold awards for five consecutive years.
The prestigious Gold Medal was presented to UPM Tilhill Head of Safety Chris Pike at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards on 12 May in Birmingham. UPM Tilhill was the only UK company in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector to win the Gold Medal in the 2010 awards.
This latest RoSPA award demonstrates that UPM Tilhill, the UKs largest timber harvesting and environmental works company, continues to meet RoSPA’s key performance requirements and achieve exceptionally high levels of health and safety management.
Chris Pike, Head of Safety, said: “We are absolutely delighted to win the Gold Medal. Health and safety is the cornerstone of everything we do and this award recognises the very high standards UPM Tilhill achieves in implementing effective and practical measures to ensure the health and safety of our employees, contractors, the general public and the environment.
Steve Lavery, Managing Director UPM Tilhill, added: “Even though our systems and processes are already rigorous, we are continually striving to improve our health and safety. Last year we implemented our Insist On Safety cultural change programme across the business which has helped reinforce the importance of health and safety in the workplace to our staff and contractors. This included a video that must be shown to all new starters and is now included as part of all sub-contractor briefings.”
The RoSPA Awards are not just about reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work, they are also about ensuring that organisations have good health and safety management systems in place. They help to reinforce the message that good health and safety is good business and clearly demonstrate an organisations commitment to the achievement of high levels of performance in this crucial area.
David Rawlins, RoSPAs awards manager, said: “UPM Tilhill has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. Organisations which do this deserve to have such dedication recognised and thats where the RoSPA Awards come in.
“As well as there being clear ethical reasons and legal requirements for good health and safety management, there is also a strong business case. RoSPA is delighted to publicly honour organisations which have demonstrated their work to improve performance in this sphere.”
