New Océ Automated Book Production Solution Helps Printers and Publishers Gain Workflow Efficiency

Tuesday 27. April 2010 - Benefits include fewer errors, reduced handling, lower costs, greater accuracy

Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, announces the Océ Automated Book Production Solution to bring book printers and publishers greater efficiency and productivity for their existing short-run book printing workflow.

With the Océ Automated Book Production Solution, book manufacturers and print service providers can gain high-level automation, workflow simplification and sustainable cost savings without impacting their current business environments. Users can quickly take their book production operations to a higher level of performance and efficiency.

Meeting Today’s Challenges in Book Production
Printers today struggle with the inefficiencies of short-run workflow, especially with run lengths of one and tighter delivery times. The patent pending Automated Book Production Solution is designed to help users avoid the typical challenges of short-run workflow:
Setup times of finishing solutions
Process control
Job hand-over and miscommunication
Error handling
Order management
“With the Automated Book Production Solution, print providers of all sizes and capabilities are better prepared to enter the digital book printing arena or expand their existing business. This new Océ solution delivers the advantages of automation to book production run lengths as small as one, opening the door for customers to pursue more profitable business opportunities,” said Eric De Goeijen, Vice President of Marketing, Production Printing Systems division, Océ North America.

Benefits Include Fewer Errors, Less Handling, Greater Accuracy
Typically, automation is applied most efficiently when a process is repeated often. Unlike other tools, the Océ Automated Book Production Solution makes digital book printing accessible and affordable, even for run lengths of just one book. Through workflow automation, users gain a more hands free, lower cost approach, which translates into fewer errors, less manual handling, greater service consistency and more accurate monitoring.

The Automated Book Production Solution works with multiple input sources, such as MIS systems, web-to-print software or third party software solutions. Files and job ticketing can be imported using JDF/JMF communication protocols or through hot folders to enable standards-based workflow. Users gain timesaving automation and accuracy for accepting, quoting, routing and spooling print jobs.

The solution allows batch management of all jobs prior to printing, and jobs can be attached by size, imposition, color, black & white, and run length. Users can drive fleets of color, monochrome engines and track jobs through finishing and mailroom environments.

End to End Tracking for Complete Communication
This new solution addresses the challenges of digital book publishing and provides a smooth working environment for print professionals. A tracking barcode is generated to identify each job from end to end, with seamless connection from print engine to finishing and fulfillment and delivery. Full connectivity across all phases of production gives print providers and their customer’s assurance that jobs are completed accurately and on time. Updates are communicated back to the original order entry system, so print providers can keep their customers informed of job status.

Easier, more thorough job management results in significantly increased productivity and cost savings. If a page or job is damaged at any point, the barcode can be scanned and automatically communicated back for an automatic reprint.

The Océ Automated Book Production Solution provides enormous savings on the post-processing end of the total workflow. Adjustment of finishing devices can be kept to a minimum, improving productivity, reducing errors and lowering labor cost. Ultimately, customers gain greater efficiency for short runs with a streamlined business workflow that increases throughput capacity with batch management.
