In a move to save cost and optimize print quality, the Santa Fe New Mexican has installed ProImage OnColor ECO ink optimization software.

Mike Campbell, Systems Administrator at the Santa Fe New Mexican, said: “OnColor ECO is a ‘set it and forget it’ system that is now seamlessly integrated within our automated NewsWay workflow system. It has brought us quantifiable ink savings in production of in-house and commercial productions on both our KBA Comet and commercial DIDDE press. Over the past 60 days, since installation, we have processed 8900 pages and are already averaging 15 percent ink saving.

“ECO processing has also brought out additional clarity in color reproduction on many pages. It has met, and exceeded our expectations.”

Ink savings are reported by OnColor ECO software, but at the Santa Fe New Mexican pounds of ink per ton of newsprint used was measured before and after the software installation verifying the reported results.

How it works:
Regardless of whether objects are RGB or CMYK, OnColor ECO automatically converts pages containing both pixel and vector data to the correct color space for optimal printing, while preserving the original color appearance.

By using a unique SISR algorithm, it ensures a close match between the output and the intended source space – even when it’s unknown. It also normalizes all color content in both graphics and text, and protects pure colors, spot colors and the gray control bar.

“Installing OnColor ECO is a no-brainer,” says Rick Shafranek, VP sales and marketing for ProImage America. “The ROI can be within weeks, print quality is improved, and at the same time you are reducing your carbon footprint. It’s that simple.”
