Portlands Future Leaders of Industry launched
Wednesday 15. July 2009 - The 2009 Future Leaders of Industry Scholarship program, aimed at encouraging local students to consider the many and varied career opportunities available in local community, was launched today at the Portland Golf Club.
The program, initiated by Portland Aluminium in 2005, has blossomed over the years with seven local businesses now supporting the leadership program.
Portland Aluminium Operations Manager Mr John Osborne said the program was developed on the principle that Portland Aluminium must be able to attract, develop, retain and have access to the best employees.
“We believe it is fundamental that we attract young people into careers in industry by keeping them engaged in further education and training and helping them to develop their skills in the region.
“And it is great to see this principle also being shared by other industry and businesses in the region.”
This years program has been co-ordinated by South West Local Learning & Education Network and scholarships and mentors have been provided from: Wannon Water, Keppel Prince Engineering, Pacific Hydro, Glenelg Shire Council, Alcoa Hatch Engineering Alliance, Port of Portland and Portland District Health.
This years Future Leaders of Industry Program includes 22 students representing the Heywood and District Secondary College, Bayview College and Portland Secondary College and will be recognised by their peers, schools, family and local industry.”
The Scholarships include $500, which is held in trust by the recipients schools for the students to use for a range of educational activities such as school resources, workshops or future study.
Scholarship recipients will also be introduced to various aspects of industry through a series of structured events, aimed at providing insight into how industry operates and around career paths and local opportunities.
A highlight of todays launch was last years Future Leaders of Industry recipient Jayden Stewart who shared his experience participating in the program and the opportunities it has provided.
