Cape Cod Times selects Harland Simon
Thursday 18. June 2009 - Following on from the success at The Times Herald Record, NY and The Forum, ND, Harland Simon has been selected by Cape Cod Times, MA to replace the Press Control Systems on their Goss Metro presses.
The conversion will be carried out in the autumn, with all presses in full production by the end of the year, without any disruption to Cape Cods busy production schedule. The project includes replacement of the main press controls, circ/sidelay motorization of four units, installation of six Prima 6000 operator consoles (all with automatic on-line soft proofing) and supply of a comprehensive suite of management system modules including direct ink presetting, auto-impositioning and color advisory systems.
The principle of the upgrade is the replacement of obsolete quality and folder controls with PRIMA 6000 control consoles and PressNet system. All proprietary communications are eliminated and replaced with an Ethernet/IP network connecting dual (includes back-up) Press Master PLCs and remote I/O modules at the Units, Reelstands, Compensators and Drives. Serial interfaces will be installed to control new CGI digital inkers, and a combination of Ryco/Technotrans dampeners and original Goss Spiral Brush dampeners.
At all times; the existing system will remain operational until the new system is fully tested and commissioned, which eliminates any risk to production. This method also keeps costs down while replacing all the vulnerable parts of the system. The solution is based on techniques that have been successfully developed for the replacement of many control systems originally supplied by Goss, Rockwell Automation, manroland and Honeywell over the past 15 years.
Mike Fabia, Cape Cods Operations Director commented, “After reviewing systems over the past few years I found that Harland Simon had the answer to our present control situation and met all of our requirements for now and in the future. After reviewing the systems on my own, I was fortunate enough to be able to follow the progress in Middletown, NY Times Herald Record (also part of the Dow Jones Local Media Group) and get feedback from Fred Stanton, Production Director in Middletown, on the success of their project and actually view the system in a true production environment. I look forward to working with Harland Simon on this project.”
Todays newspapers are motivated to replace obsolete hardware, while reducing on-going cost and minimizing risk. Harland Simons core solutions are based upon improved technical support and enhanced features such as comprehensive press monitoring, touch screen technology, on-line soft proofing, advanced reporting and ink presetting with adaptive (learning) algorithms.
John Staiano, Senior Vice President for Harland Simon, further commented, “We are delighted that Mike has selected Harland Simon to fulfill his cost reduction and obsolescent needs. One of the great strengths of Harland Simon is our wide range of experience across most press suppliers and vintages of press.”
This will be the second controls upgrade project Harland Simon has undertaken within Dow Jones Local Media Group, the first being Times Herald Record-Middletown, NY, which was successfully completed first quarter of 2008, which straight away saw a considerable reduction in the amount of paper waste and ink required to produce their publications.
