Alcoa Anglesea responds to energy campaign
Monday 08. June 2009 - Alcoa Anglesea is aware of an event taking place at Parliament House today in relation to Alcoas Anglesea Power Station.
Over many years, Alcoa has met with many environmental groups and enjoyed a frank and constructive dialogue.
Alcoa has long accepted the science of climate change and is committed to realistic and sustainable solutions to the challenge. Alcoa has taken a voluntary global leadership position on addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
With energy a significant part of Alcoas cost base, reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency is a core business objective. Alcoa will therefore continue to explore a range of realistic options to transition to a sustainable low-carbon future.
In 2003, Alcoa achieved its target of reducing global direct greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent from a base year of 1990. Since 2003, Alcoa has further reduced global direct greenhouse gas emissions to 33 per cent below 1990 levels. Alcoa continues to address greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency, productivity improvements and technological innovation.
In Victoria, Alcoa has voluntarily:
Reduced direct emissions by 61 per cent, indirect emissions associated with electricity use by almost 3 per cent and total emission intensity by 16 per cent from 1990 levels
Conducted research into clean coal and carbon capture and storage as well as proposed the use of the Anglesea Power Station as a pilot plant for such technologies
Sought to secure gas supply for the Anglesea Power Station over many years
Successfully trialled bio-diesel at the Anglesea Power Station (before encountering supply issues)
Provided funding for community-based programs with organisations like Sustainability Victoria and Greening Australia to increase recycling rates and reduce greenhouse gases.
