Joining forces to celebrate World Environment Day
Wednesday 03. June 2009 - Employees from Portland Aluminium, Greening Australia and volunteers from Friends of the Surry River will mark World Environment Day by joining forces for a tree planting activity tomorrow (May 5).
The group will come together at a site on the banks of the Surry River, near the Highway Bridge, at Narrawong.
Approximately 500 trees and grasses will be planted to rehabilitate a degraded area affected by inappropriate use.
The Surry River has been chosen as Alcoa Portland Aluminiums Signature River in South West Victoria, aligning with Greening Australias River Recovery program.
The River Recovery program brings together business leaders, scientists, community-based organisations and government agencies to apply the best knowledge and tools in the restoration, protection and management of Australias river systems.
Alcoa is the national foundation alliance partner of this landmark program.
Portland Aluminium operations manager John Osborne said Portland Aluminium has been celebrating World Environment Day with employees and the community for more than 17 years and was proud to be associated with the annual event.
“World Environment Day is an excellent opportunity to come together to improve the environment in which we live and work,” Mr Osborne said.
“The partnership between Greening Australia, Friends of the Surrey and Portland Aluminium is an excellent example of organisations banding together to improve the environment, raise awareness in the community and help educate our future generations.”
