Die Zeit first to install NewsWay Mobile

Marina Struse, Prepress concept and management, Zeitverlag Gerd Bucerius GmbH & Co., checks workflow progress with NewsWay Mobile

Tuesday 19. May 2009 - workflow management on the move

Zeitverlag Gerd Bucerius GmbH & Co’s flagship, Die Zeit, the most widely read newspaper in Germany, has become the first newspaper in the world to install NewsWay Mobile.

Zeitverlag first installed ProImage NewsWay, a complete end-to-end browser-based workflow solution, in 2000 in order to automate and control its entire print production workflow for Die Zeit as well as for its magazine production – from editorial and planning, to the presses. Ever since it has regularly enjoyed software enhancements that bring valuable new capabilities.

The latest, NewsWay Mobile, a workflow solution for mobile devices, was launched at the NAA’s (Newspaper Association of America) mediaXchange expo in March. It provides a real-time view of all devices within the workflow, the status of each device, and ability to amend the workflow – with the added benefit of being able to proof and approve a page whilst on the move – on an iPhone or similar mobile device.

“NewsWay provides a high efficiency to our production processes, from origination to data transfer of TIFF and PDF to the print sites,” said Marina Struse, Prepress concept und management, Zeitverlag Gerd Bucerius GmbH & Co. “Now NewsWay Mobile makes it possible to control the workflow whilst on the move, from anywhere.”

At Die Zeit, PostScript pages are created and sent to NewsWay which then generates TIFF G4 files for proofing. Once approved, PDF pages are created for FTP transmission from its publishing offices in Hamburg to its three remote print sites, in Ahrensburg, Frankfurt, and Hamburg.
