Metso supplies power boiler for green energy production in Poland

Wednesday 13. May 2009 - Metso will supply PGE Zespó? Elektrowni Dolna Odra S.A. with a biomass-fired power boiler to their combined heat and power (CHP) plant located in Szczecin on the north-west coast of Poland. Start-up of the boiler plant is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011. The value of the order is approximately EUR 60 million. The order is included in Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q2 orders received.

The power boiler with the steam capacity of 183 MW will utilize bubbling fluidized bed technology and will burn forest residue, willow chips and straw pellets to produce electricity to the national grid and district heat for the city of Szczecin. Metso will also supply plant’s automation and information management system.

PGE Zespó? Elektrowni Dolna Odra is modernizing its Szczecin CHP plant and will now replace old coal-fired boilers with the new unit to combust biomass. With the new fluidized bed technology the company will significantly increase its green energy production from renewable fuels. By its capacity the Szczecin green energy plant will be the largest biomass energy project in Central Europe and it has received support from Szczecin Province Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, as well as National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

The annual electricity production in 2008 amounted to approximately 56 TWh in net figures whereas the installed capacity totals 12.4 GW. PGE counts nearly 46,600 employees and it is fully-owned by the state of Poland.
