Quark and The Art Institutes Recognize Students Portfolio Work in Annual Graphic Design Contest
Wednesday 08. April 2009 - First Place Winner Awarded Trip to the National Student Design Show in Dallas, TX, and a Two-Month Internship with Quark
Quark and The Art Institutes today announced the winners of their annual graphic design competition. “Portfolio Work” was the theme of this years contest and student entries were required to exhibit excellent design, contain proper formatting for production, and include relevant features from QuarkXPress. The grand prize includes an all expenses paid trip to the National Student Design Show in Dallas, TX, and a two-month paid internship with Quark.
“Quark and The Art Institutes have hosted our graphic design contest for four years, and each year we field more entries than the year before,” said Terry Welty, senior vice president of corporate marketing for Quark. “The success of the contest, our strong relationship with The Art Institutes, and the skill of the winners encouraged us to include an internship with Quark as a part of the grand prize.”
The grand prize was awarded to Victor Trevino of The Illinois Institute of Art — Chicago. Trevino entered the only multi-page layout that made the competition finals. Judges were impressed by his effective use of type throughout the layout and his solid overall use of QuarkXPress.
“The example of portfolio work that Victor submitted caught the eye of our judges because his use of type within the layout was so well done,” said Chris Edwards, senior account manager for education at Quark. “We congratulate him on his innovative design, and look forward to his internship with us.”
“Its an honor to have won this years design contest,” said Trevino. “My design focused on time, and my aim was to use type in a minimalist fashion to create all the graphics within the layout. Im happy it resonated with the judges and I cant wait to work with Quark.”
In addition to the grand prize, Quark awarded second and third place prizes. Second and third place prize winners were awarded a copy of QuarkXPress 8 for Education and a $500 credit to the AiStudentStore. The winners are as follows:
SECOND PRIZE:
Luis Valderrama
The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale
“Florida Youth Orchestra”
THIRD PRIZE:
Mario Torres
The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale
“Typographica”
“Our annual design contest with The Art Institutes is one of the most enjoyable initiatives we do all year and its encouraging to see so many young and growing designers,” said Edwards.
