Poligrafici Editoriale Group implements integrated pagination with Atex Solutions

Wednesday 18. March 2009 - The Poligrafici Editoriale Group has updated its editorial system with the latest generation of the Atex Hermes solution, providing users more effective and productive tools

§          Editorial and advertising layout processes are now completely integrated thanks to Atex Hermes Supervisor TQ, an additional component of Hermes, that makes the production cycle shorter by reducing the potential for mistakes and conflicts.

Atex, the world’s largest and longest serving provider of print and digital solutions for media companies, announces that Poligrafici Editoriale Group has recently updated its content management systems with the latest generation of the Atex Hermes solution to fully integrate its digital pre-press processes, starting from the advertising department throughout the printing process. Thanks to these new tools, users are able to control production in real time at every step, preventing mistakes and conflicts.
Poligrafici Editoriale Group publishes three dailies (Il Resto del Carlino, La Nazione and Il Giorno), that have joined forces to set up an innovative project: QN, Quotidiano Nazionale, a common title with news from Italy and abroad about politics, economy, finance, recent events and sport. With newsrooms editing more than 700 pages per day, the QN system is a unique initiative in the Italian newspaper industry. With more than a century of experience in the media industry, the group combines national and international coverage with detailed local information; it also carries on a modern and innovative editorial model for content and layout.

The aim of the project delivered by Atex was to change from manual management of editorial planning to a management process that is fully automated and integrated with the editorial system. Prior to the implementation of Hermes Supervisor TQ, the layout specialists adopted a labour intensive process that required drawing directly on to the editorial pages, based on information provided by the ad sales department. Going live with Supervisor TQ, ad planning is now directly produced by the ad sales departments, making it immediately available for the pre-press offices of the different newspapers.
Supervisor TQ, the Atex solution used for this project, improves the management of the workflow process from the ad sales department to the printing sites, allowing the people involved in the production to interact in real time. By offering a single system that can be used by both the ad sales department and the editors, Supervisor TQ eliminates the need for an external program to manage the different levels of ad dummying.
Besides eliminating several interfaces and implementations, Supervisor TQ enables users to check the status of the activities in real time, and to view both advertising and editorial content during the production process. As a result, it’s possible to solve conflicts and mistakes in advance, and have a far more effective system. Moreover, at any time the system is able to track changes made during planning.
With the implementation of Supervisor TQ, production times can be significantly shortened: firstly waiting times are considerably reduced thanks to the flexibility of the solution, secondly managing content and advertising can be done simultaneously, ensuring that planning is automatically updated, even when pages are in use by the content management system. Every change made in the original ad plan is shown in the editorial planning in real time. In this way, it is possible to limit the risk of mistakes and misunderstandings, and to improve the handling of last minute changes.
Marco Pagani, IT Director at Poligrafici Editoriale, confirming the Group’s trust in Atex solutions, said: “By automating the workflow, Hermes Supervisor TQ allows regular, accurate product tracking for all people involved in the workflow. The benefits we get from this new implementation add great value in a complex editorial environment such as ours; it has had a significant and positive effect on our production processes”.
Roberto Antoniotti, CEO of Atex Content Management Division, underlined the interest in implementing an innovative production process for print products, a view shared by both Atex and Poligrafici Editoriale Group. “With the implementation project now completed, Atex has been able to prove how reliable its solutions are, even when they have to support highly complex production processes, such as those in place at Poligrafici Editoriale Group”, he stated. “Atex is committed to promoting and supporting integrated production models, which can be achieved using innovative digital technologies. The great benefit of this solution is that it enables companies to change from a multi-step production system to a model focused on the content itself”.
