Tribune Company Selects CCI NewsGate to Accomplish Significant Consolidation
Wednesday 11. March 2009 - Extensive content sharing across multiple titles and an innovative platform to support digital media initiatives are key drivers for Tribunes move to CCI NewsGate; Significant savings and new business opportunities are anticipated
Tribune Company has entered into an agreement with CCI for CCI NewsGate editorial system accommodating approximately 2300 concurrent users. When fully implemented, all Tribune titles and properties, including Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, will work out of an environment with shared desks delivering content to both print and digital media. Content may be reused across titles “as is” or adjusted for a local angle. Content exclusively for local sections will also be created out of the consolidated environment.
“The current challenges in the media market mean that publishing houses need to think hard about cutting costs,” said Paul Mitnick, Tribunes vice president/business applications. “We have decided to consolidate editorial processes, including extensive content sharing across multiple titles and properties. With its built-in data center and collaboration capabilities, CCI NewsGate is the optimal technological platform to implement this decision. And we expect to come out of this change in editorial strategy with significant savings.”
In addition to its extensive content sharing functionality, CCI NewsGate offers an efficient and flexible platform for planning and publishing content in multiple digital channels.
“CCI NewsGate will provide Tribune Company with a tool to manage its resources and coverage across all of its sites in print, online and broadcast,” said Randall Weissman, News Administration Editor/Chicago Tribune and Editorial director for the Tribune Company project. “It will allow us to maximize the use and impact of the outstanding journalism produced across our company, regardless of the medium or location where it originated,”
Dan Korsgaard, CEO of CCI, sees the new agreement as a continuation of a strong partnership between CCI and Tribune that began in the 1990s.
“CCIs business is to support the business of our partners,” said Korsgaard. “When our partners make important strategic decisions, it is our job to provide the technology and services necessary to support the implementation of these decisions. So it is greatly satisfying to us to see that the visions behind CCI NewsGate and the development work that we have undertaken — inspired along the way by our partners — have resulted in a solution which meets the demands of Tribune Company in todays challenging media landscape.”
The CCI NewsGate project is already underway, with system setups in progress. According to the fast implementation project plan, end-to-end tests will take place on April 15 and a common go-live for Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Orlando Sentinel and Sun-Sentinel is planned late August. Rollout of Hartford Courant, Baltimore Sun, Daily Press and The Morning Call will follow in a second wave.
