New Technology from DuPont Unlocks Design Potential for Cosmetic Packaging

DuPont Cosmetics Solutions has introduced an innovative new technology that enables broader use of DuPont™ Surlyn® for cosmetics and fragrance containers.

Friday 06. March 2009 - DuPont Cosmetics Solutions has introduced an innovative new technology that enables broader use of DuPont Surlyn for cosmetics and fragrance containers.

Overmolding Surlyn on polymer shapes increases design freedom by enabling contrasting designs for the internal and external walls, new decorating techniques and frosted or glossy effects on exterior surfaces.
“These new design options are very exciting,” said Prosper Zufferey, technical expert at DuPont Cosmetic Solutions. “Intricate shapes and decorative effects such as sophisticated colors, metallic and fantasy coatings, frosted and unusual tactile properties – most of which are extremely difficult to achieve in extrusion blow molding – are easily produced by overmolding with Surlyn. This can eliminate the use of glass in the bottle’s design, for safer use and more cost-effective production.”
“Surlyn is well-known in the packaging industry for providing the same transparency and feel as glass without its fragility,” Zufferey said. “Moreover, because no glass is used in the packaging, there are no breakable parts for greater user safety, while any waste may be reground for future use.”
