The New York Times Launches Weekly News Supplement in Two Additional Countries: Romania and Georgia

Friday 06. February 2009 - The New York Times announced today that it has launched The New York Times international news supplement in two additional newspapers around the world: 24 Saati in Georgia and Romania Libera in Romania.

24 Saati and Romania Libera join a global network of newspapers that carry the news supplement, first published in 2002.
The international supplement retains the layout and typography of The New York Times and includes news coverage, features, commentary, color photos and graphics about the United States, world affairs, business, culture and social trends. It is prepared in New York by a team of editors and designers from The New York Times News Service.
“We are very pleased to have Romania Libera and 24 Saati – two publications that share our commitment to quality journalism – joining our network of newspapers carrying The New York Times section,” said Cristian Edwards, president of the New York Times News Services Division. “We are delighted to be working with these prestigious publications to bring The New York Times journalism to their audiences.”
“The collaboration with The New York Times honors us,” said Dan Turturica, editor-in-chief of Romania Libera. “In a world where the bond between the local events and the international ones is more and more volatile, The New York Times supplement offers a global approach to the reality we live in.”
Romania Libera was founded in 1877 and is owned by Medien Holding SRL. Medien Holding is a joint media venture between the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) and the The Nova Group. Medien Holding’s properties include the Romania Libera newspaper, Romania Libera Printing House and seven magazines: Domus, Caminul, Casa Mea, Planul Casei Mele, Unelte si Echipamente, Util and Clever Travel.
“The New York Times is a founder of world press standards,” said Mamuka Phachuashvili, 24 Saati’s publisher and editor-in-chief. “It is great honor and responsibility to cooperate with The New York Times. “This will have a great influence on the further development of Georgian media and the irreversibility of liberal democracy.”
24 Saati was founded on July 1, 2002 and is currently the largest circulation newspaper in Georgia. The publication is jointly owned by MVP Ltd. and Verlagsgruppe Passau, a German publishing group.
The New York Times News Service provides more than 250 articles daily from all sections of The New York Times to more than 600 news organizations in 50 countries. The News Service also maintains The New York Times Photo and Graphics Service. Articles and images are distributed via the Web site
