Raleigh News & Observer to Join McClatchy’s CCI NewsGate Data Center

Monday 29. December 2008 - 190 users will be added to McClatchy’s multi-newsroom, multi-media content management system

CCI Europe today announced it has signed an agreement to add The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) to McClatchy´s NewsGate data center (announced January 2008). The McClatchy NewsGate data center is currently live at the Charlotte Observer (Charlotte, N.C.) and will also include the Herald (Rock Hill, S.C.). The Raleigh newspaper will also serve as a disaster recovery site for the data center system. With 190 users, The News & Observer is the third McClatchy newspaper to sign onto the data center.

The NewsGate data center is part of McClatchy´s strategy to enhance news coverage for readers and web users for its seven newspapers in the Carolinas, while improving efficient resource use. The group plans to use the NewsGate data center to enhance and speed an expanding package of shared content among the newspapers, including a shared integration with McClatchy Interactive, which provides the Internet publishing platform to all McClatchy newspapers. With CCI NewsGate, McClatchy newsrooms will be able to share news coverage, research assignments and content plans, helping make the best possible use of staff resources to cover news events for multiple papers. The group will be able to share stories, photos, graphics and active media content, as well as full articles and pages of common interest in areas such as features, sports and local news.

“We´ve been working cooperatively with Charlotte and Rock Hill newsrooms for a while, but we are expecting CCI NewsGate to make team coverage easier and more efficient,” said John Drescher, Editor of the News & Observer. “Especially on big, fast-moving stories such as hurricanes, where getting up-to-the-minute information to readers is essential.”

McClatchy Newspapers became CCI Europe´s first NewsGate data center customer with the signing of a multi-newsroom deal announced in January. The data center structure, which allows multiple newsrooms to exist within one NewsGate system, was key to McClatchy´s decision. The NewsGate data center will allow McClatchy staffs to review news budgets of sister papers and share all types of content dynamically.

“As our news operations transform the way that they cover and deliver news to our readers we are looking to NewsGate to play a large part in that overall process,” said Terry Geiger, Director of Corporate Information Technology for The McClatchy Company. “We believe that the NewsGate system gives our operations the technical platform and tool kit that they need to realize their vision for growth and efficiency.”

CCI Europe chief Dan Korsgaard says McClatchy will see long-term benefit from this approach.

“The McClatchy group´s data center will allow them to develop efficiencies across the board, for long-term returns on their investment,” said Korsgaard, CEO of CCI Europe. “Their strategy is also a great example of how the right technology can help news companies remain competitive and retain their audience base.” The (Raleigh) News & Observer is one of 30 daily newspapers in The McClatchy Company, the third largest newspaper company in the United States. McClatchy also operates leading local websites in each of its markets which extend its audience reach. The websites offer users comprehensive news and information, advertising, e-commerce and other services. Together with its newspapers and direct marketing products, these interactive operations make McClatchy the leading local media company in each of its premium high growth markets. McClatchy-owned newspapers include The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Kansas City Star.
