Estudios Durero, masters of customisation with a KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 Digital Production Color Press

Kodak NexPress 2500

Friday 14. November 2008 - The KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 Press has enabled Estudios Durero to custom print 185,000 catalogues in 11 languages and with 412 different covers

There are few companies in Spain capable of custom printing 185,000 catalogues in 11 languages and with 412 different covers in just 15 days. Last summer multinational toy chain Imaginarium entrusted this job to Estudios Durero and the Basque Country printer did not disappoint, since it completed the order flawlessly using a KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 digital press system.

Ander Soriano, Founder and Managing Director of Estudios Durero explains that “this order constituted a challenge to the company, since it would push the output of the equipment to the limit, however the KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 coped without any problems and the equipment worked perfectly”. In actual fact, Soriano points out that “this is the type of work in which we intend to specialise since we prefer to concentrate on customisation rather than short runs, which is the other avenue for digital printing.”

Ander Soriano set up Estudios Durero, a digital image processing shop, in 1996 but since then his eagerness to develop in the sector and offer added value have led to his involvement in the founding of five other companies specialising in related fields: Mercator for mapping; Izaki.ES, a digital image archive; Initia, a graphics workshop; One to One, a customised marketing and PR company; and De Luxe Communication, aimed at publishing magazines associated with the world of luxury. Taken together, these companies employ 74 professionals and are part of the same group located at 2,200 m² facilities in the Zamudio (Vizcaya, Spain) technology park.

Soriano set out in this industry at the age of 16 in a photomechanical shop and this experience led him years later to set up Estudios Durero. From straight prepress, Estudios Durero has gradually expanded its offering with services that include plate-setting and film-setting, billboard work, Digiform, information management and digital printing. It is specifically in the latter two fields that Kodak has had a great deal of involvement since they have worked shoulder to shoulder to implement the KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System, KODAK MATCHPRINT Virtual Technology and the KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 digital press system.

A sound relationship with Kodak down the years and the performance of the KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 convinced Soriano that it was the ideal system for his business. Thanks to the KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 they were formally able to take the plunge into digital print production and, after two years of working with this system, the Managing Director of Estudios Durero considers the outcome to be positive. “Prinergy provides us with a very powerful workflow system, enabling us to coordinate the software fully at management level, we use it in all the companies in the group, but in addition we have it linked to the customisation system with the NEXPRESS and the result is a complete solution which really works”.

The KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 Digital Production Colour Press is an extremely productive solution for high-quality colour printing. Its fully modular design enables it to be configured flexibly, and the high infeed and delivery paper capacity allows five-colour printing to run without interruption for longer. In addition, it accepts a wide variety of substrate types, sizes, weights and thicknesses and as Soriano confirms, “The KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 enables us to work with different substrates and in actual fact we have a substantial range of options in different papers in various thicknesses and finishes. This system enables us to print on paper, coated or otherwise, textured materials, synthetic labels and transparencies”.

The KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 printing system is designed for maximum reliability and provides for an unprecedented level of user serviceability. With over 40 components which can be replaced by the operator, a knowledge base and a top-quality built-in diagnostics system, a great many problems are avoided. “It is a very reliable unit with an excellent diagnostics system, which really helps in the event of any problems arising. The only requirement for the system to operate properly is its periodic maintenance”.

The arrival of the NEXPRESS system enabled Soriano to launch a new company: One to One, Marketing y Comunicación. Using a multichannel software package (SMS, e-mail, web and print) One to One does mail shots, leaflets, customised pages for magazines among many other jobs, but at no time has there been any attempt to compete with the agencies, precisely because they are also part of the client base. Indeed these very customised print jobs that go to One to One are subcontracted to Estudios Durero and are carried out with the KODAK NEXPRESS 2500.

Soriano has preferred to focus his business on customisation, despite the fact that they also produce short runs, although to a lesser extent. “At this point in time, we have staked our future on digital printing and it is a fact that the majority of our runs are customised”. Soriano is also grateful to Kodak for their MarketMover business development services. Kodak lent us a customisation expert who initially laid the foundations to develop the customisation business with NEXPRESS and who is still in contact with the company to contribute his ideas and help us continue developing this market.

The core business for Estudios Durero is printing quality billboard work. “What we offer is a different type of billboard print to that which can be found in other companies in the industry because we start with equipment which is highly colour-calibrated, we have a great deal of experience and we experiment to create more opportunities in this sphere. Customers prize all this added value, so it is little wonder that we operate in such highly demanding sectors as the arts”, explains Soriano.
