Goss International at IFRA targets competitive advantage through New Ways for Print
Tuesday 28. October 2008 - Continuing the theme premiered at Drupa, New Ways for Print', Goss International is focusing on the opportunities and competitive advantages available for newspaper printers of all sizes at IFRA Expo 2008. Showcasing press, finishing, workflow and Lifetime Support solutions, the company is emphasizing how automation, integration, versatility and enhanced capabilities can add value and create new business possibilities.
“New Ways for Print defines our direction, both in terms of technological innovation and business development. We are committed to approaching our customers’ issues with creativity and imagination,” comments Eric Bell, Goss International marketing manager. “At IFRA Expo, we’re emphasizing the breadth of options for our customers, whether relating to new press equipment or to capabilities and efficiencies that can be integrated into existing press systems. Automation options, for example, can involve a relatively modest investment and rapid installation but can open up a whole new world of opportunity.”
Goss FPS press system
Typifying the News Ways for Print’ principle, the compact Goss FPS press is aimed at providing printers with unparalleled opportunities for commercial creativity.
Since the last IFRA Expo, Independent News & Media of Newry, Northern Ireland has achieved average production levels of more than 2 million coldset and heatset copies per week from its existing five-tower Goss FPS press. The company recently announced an order for an additional 5×2 heatset/coldset tower with Ecocool dryer and another 4×2 coldset tower. Automation features of the new press include: fully automatic de-plating, full press pre-setting from inkers to web tension, automatic blanket wash including on-the-run washing for heatset production, automatic ink train washing, automatic reel loading, ink changeover, press start-up and stop. The new configuration, with the two additional towers, will produce up to 192 full-color coldset tabloid pages or 120 heatset tabloid pages collect.
Also since the last IFRA, the Goss Flexible Printing System press has been installed and commissioned at contract printer F.D. Hoekstra Boom in Emmeloord, Holland, and is printing this year’s show daily, the IFRA Gazette’. This is the first FPS press to be specified with future cut-off change capability to provide ultimate flexibility for its contract work. For Hoekstra Boom, the press signifies an additional security, allowing the family firm to focus on winning print contacts, confident in the knowledge that it can fulfill requirements whatever format publishers may choose for the future.
During the show, Goss International is organizing trips to Hoekstra Boom for customers interested in seeing the capabilities of the innovative FPS press design.
Goss Magnum press system
The modular Goss Magnum press with new three-form inker and shaftless drive options proves that new capabilities and efficiencies are available to smaller printers. Automation options combined with production power and reliability were crucial factors for Tryck i Norrbotten of Luleå, in northeast Sweden. The company recently ordered a new footprint shaftless Goss Magnum 4 press system with half and quarterfold capability, Goss level 3 imposition controls and motorized ink keys. Tryck i Norrbotten will print a brand new newspaper from 2009. The new Magnum press will also allow them to produce three sections in one run, providing the capability to print the sports section in addition to the main newspaper and TV guide.
Goss Universal and Uniliner – new press features
Also being highlighted at IFRA are the incremental design updates that bring New Ways for Print’ rationale to existing Goss press models. With an installed base approaching 600 Uniliner units and more than 5,000 Universal units across all models, these are two of the most enduring and popular Goss presses. As showcased at drupa, the Universal and Uniliner press models have a range of new features including a semi-automatic plate change option, new compact configurations using T90′ layouts and improved heatset/coldset operation with Goss DigiRail inking. These design modifications offer new levels of press efficiency, production speed and product flexibility to maintain a competitive advantage for the longer term.
Goss Lifetime Support
The Goss Lifetime Support program reflects the company-wide philosophy of optimizing performance and competitive lifespan of every press system. Covering service, parts, training and enhancement options, representatives are at IFRA to discuss opportunities to maximize reliability, productivity and quality from current and future installed press equipment.
As well as the initial operator training that takes place in tandem with press installation, at IFRA Goss International is also promoting ongoing computer-aided training. Expertise can guide customers through the potential added value of understanding the full capabilities of their press system, such as how to achieve single-width production flexibility from a double-width press.
“From new installations to presses that are more than fifteen years old, there are ways and means to squeezing more profitability out of production. What is required is a creative approach and good partnership,” concludes Eric Bell. “In times of economic uncertainty it is important to weigh the options carefully, but doing nothing is not a viable option in the medium- to long-term. We are working with our customers to find the most effective route for them to ensure their longstanding competitiveness.”
