Klabin wins five environmental awards

Thursday 09. October 2008 - Not only was the company the highlight of the Expressão Ecology Awards, but it also won an ABTCP award and the Environmental Benchmarking Award

Last month the environmental management of Klabin, Brazil’s biggest paper producer, exporter and recycler, won five awards of national prestige, reaffirming its position as the benchmark in corporate management for sustainability.

At the Expressão Ecology Awards alone, which are the most important awards given in the South of the country, the company won in three categories. In the category of Wild Life Conservation it won with the successful case of “Klabin’s Biodiversity Monitoring Program”, which is run at the Monte Alegre (PR), Otacílio Costa and Correia Pinto (SC) Plants. The text handed to the jury discloses how Klabin has contributed to the preservation of fauna and flora through its forest stewardship system.

With this same case, Klabin was also winner of the Environmental Benchmarking Award, the only Brazilian prize to analyze the best corporate practices.

Also at the Expressão Ecology Awards, the company won in the category of Conservation of Natural Resources with its Legal Woods Program, developed in conjunction with the NGO Apremavi (Association for the Preservation of the Environment and Life). The goal of this initiative is to help farmers plan their properties in an adequate manner, by preserving nature and developing productive activities which are sustainable and comply with legislation.

As well as donating seedlings of native species, Klabin allocates a specialized technical team to train the farmers in the concepts of ecology and to orientate them on how to carry out activities like agriculture, ecotourism and forestry incentives. As a result they comply with standing environmental regulations and in addition they prepare an agreeable place to both live and work.

Another category in which the company excelled at the Expressão Ecology Awards was Environmental Education – A Public-Private Partnership with the Junior Green Force Program. This action, which placed first among the projects presented, receives support from the Green Force Battalion of the Environment and provides training for children in environmental preservation, turning them into environmental agents who care for nature and involve their community.

Klabin won two other acknowledgments at the Highlights of the Sector Awards promoted by ABTCP (Brazilian Technical Association of Pulp and Paper). The company won in the categories of Preservation of the Environment and Packaging Paper Producer. “These awards are a tribute to Klabin’s practices both historically and in its everyday life. We combine our production activities with environmental preservation and our commitment to the market”, states Jose Totti, director of Klabin’s Forestry Business Unit.
