Borealis gains Thumbs Up for new Borstar RJ900MO polypropylene

Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, has introduced a new grade of Borstar® random polypropylene (PP) with a unique combination of flow and transparency.

Thursday 25. September 2008 - Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, has introduced a new grade of Borstar random polypropylene (PP) with a unique combination of flow and transparency.

Borstar RJ900MO was developed to meet the packaging market need for shorter cycle times, transparency and mechanical properties in applications such as house- and kitchenware and food packaging. The material also offers very good organoleptic properties and low extractables to meet the needs of the packaging producer, filler and end user.

The grade offers a combination of excellent transparency, good antistatic and optimized demoulding properties. Due to its high flow and mechanical performance, Borstar RJ900MO is well suited for the fast production of items with very thin walls, long flow length / thickness ratio and complex geometries. As all Borealis Borstar PP 2G packaging grades, Borstar RJ900MO has full food approval. Grades produced using Borstar PP 2G technology have been designed to meet the anticipated demanding food approval requirements of the future.

Borstar RJ900MO is particularly suited for thin wall packaging applications in food (dairy, confectionery, convenience food); non-food (cosmetics, media, electronic); houseware containers such as kitchenware and storage systems; and caps and closures.

Borstar RJ900MO was developed using Borealis’ proprietary Borstar PP 2G technology, the latest generation of multi-modal processes. Yielding a step change in polymer design, Borstar PP 2G consists of a new catalyst system in combination with process improvements. This results in a simplified process with fewer steps that offers even better safety, through modified catalyst handling.

The technology enables the molecular tailoring of PP to provide an optimal balance between processability and mechanical strength. This extends Borealis’ product range with more sophisticated, customer-oriented solutions. The PP 2G innovations are focused on unique combinations of properties and allow differentiation by a step change in purity, improved optical properties, improved stiffness – impact balance, excellent processability supporting high line speeds and transparent soft PPs.

“As a houseware producer with focus and ambitions for excellent design in combination with high productivity, Thumbs Up is actively looking for products and partners to achieve this. When Borealis presented Borstar RJ900MO, we used the opportunity to test it together with their experts and we were very pleased with the outcome” comments John McGuiness, CEO of Thumbs Up. “RJ900MO simplifies our operation of new thinwall and complicated design houseware due to very good flow. At the same time, the transparency is excellent. RJ900MO is, simply said, good news for us.”
