A Technological Decision for COLORMAN, XXL

A highly-automated COLORMAN, XXL web offset newspaper press from manroland will print amongst others the Mittelbayerische Zeitung in the new printing and logistics center of the Mittelbayerische Verlag.

Friday 19. September 2008 - Within the scope of complete replanning of a printing and logistics center that is scheduled to come on stream as early as January 1, 2010, the Mittelbayerische Verlag has made a future-oriented investment decision and ordered a highly-automated COLORMAN, XXL web offset newspaper press from manroland.

The Mittelbayerische Zeitung is a regional daily newspaper with its headquarters in Regensburg, Germany and belongs to the Mittelbayerischer Verlag KG. With 13 regional editions and a daily circulation of around 130,000 copies, the paper’s distribution area in Bavaria extends from the Upper Palatinate to parts of Lower Bavaria. The Mittelbayerische Zeitung, along with the publishing company’s own give-away ad newspaper “Rundschau” that has a weekly circulation of some 500,000 copies, appear in the Berliner format and are produced by the Mittelbayerische Druckzentrum GmbH & Co. KG. This printing company has been an independent subsidiary of the Mittelbayerischer Verlag since January 2006 and is a modern, high-performance and dependable newspaper printer that has been in business for more than 60 years. The print portfolio is widely varied: from medium circulations right up to circulations running into the millions. Besides the Mittelbayerische Zeitung which has appeared in a new and modern layout since November 2007, the company also produces Sunday and weekly newspapers, freesheets, magazines and advertising supplements as a trade printer.

Always one step ahead
An important factor in the decision to invest in the COLORMAN, XXL from manroland was the newspaper printing technology that is the most modern on the market today. “The decision for manroland was a technological one. The many years of experience with 6-2 technology was of prime importance and one reason why we see manroland as the right partner for our future. They develop groundbreaking technologies for the printing industry that go beyond the printing process as such,” says Ludwig Grüneisl, Managing Director of the Mittelbayerische Druckzentrum about his company’s investment in the new press.

The COLORMAN, XXL that the Mittelbayerische Druckzentrum will in future use to print products of up to 72 pages for its customers has a web width of 1,890 millimeters, a cylinder circumference of 940 millimeters, and a maximum speed of 45,000 revolutions per hour. Especially in modern newspaper printing companies, short changeover times are becoming increasingly important these days; partly because runs are split more and more often, and partly because the competition among printers is fierce. This environment demands customized solutions which manroland can provide through the highest level of automation.

Precisely these considerations were deciding factors for the investment in the manroland COLORMAN, XXL. Right at the top of the list was APL, the fully-automated plate changing system with the additional PlateScan plate assignment control facility. The press is also to have Closed-Loop systems developed by manroland that take care of many different press settings fully automatically. Besides that, the new COLORMAN, XXL is to be equipped with AUROSYS, manroland’s reel handling system. The Mittelbayerische Druckzentrum and manroland are looking forward to successfully implementing this project.
