Staples, Inc. Names Elizabeth A. Smith to Its Board of Directors

Wednesday 10. September 2008 - Staples, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) announced today the appointment of Elizabeth A. Smith, president of Avon Products, Inc., to its board of directors.

“Liz brings a wealth of global business expertise, consumer products knowledge and operating experience, making her a great addition to our strong board of directors,” said Ron Sargent, Staples chairman and chief executive officer.

Smith is responsible for Avon’s world-wide product-to-market processes, infrastructure and systems, which includes Global Brand Marketing, Global Supply Chain, Global Sales and Global Information Technology. She also leads the company’s North American Operations. Smith joined Avon in January 2005 as executive vice president and Brand president and was given the additional role of leading Avon North America in September 2005. Smith was named president, Avon Products, Inc. in September 2007.

Prior to joining Avon, Smith worked at Kraft Foods, Inc. for 14 years, most recently as group vice president and president U.S. Beverages and Grocery Sectors from January 2004 to November 2004. Previously, she served as group vice president of Kraft Foods, Inc. and president of U.S. Beverage, Desserts and Cereal from October 2002 to January 2004, and executive vice president and general manager of the Beverage Division from September 2000 to October 2002. Smith is a member of the Boards of Directors of Carter’s, Inc. and the Personal Care Products Council.
