Wednesday 03. September 2008 - Heidelberg drives "green printing" Company makes print processes more environmentally friendly Print shops increasingly pursue environmental approaches throughout the world
“Green printing” is the key focus of the new Sustainability Report from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) for the 2007/2008 financial year. It underpins Heidelbergs long-term commitment to developing solutions that limit the depletion of resources, reduce emissions, and cut waste. The extensive catalog of measures covers not just actual usage of presses but also their development and production. The companys eighth Sustainability Report covers approximately 40 pages and includes details of key indicators. It is divided into sections covering the environment, business, and social responsibility.
In the environment section, Heidelberg shows how comprehensive reductions in energy, paper, and ink consumption protect the environment and help cut costs in print shops. The latest technologies for cutting energy consumption are presented in a further section. Heidelbergs long-standing commitment to environmental protection is reinforced at its own sites by annually implemented improvement processes, as demonstrated in this years report at the Wiesloch-Walldorf, Brandenburg, and Leipzig plants.
The business section of the report focuses on “green printing” in practice. Heidelberg customers worldwide are already very active in pursuing environmental solutions. Examples from the UK and Canada show how environmentally friendly printing can lead to competitive advantages.
Trade in consumables for print shops has until now played a relatively minor role at Heidelberg. How that is set to change in the future is explained on three pages. Within the next few years, sales in this business area are set to double.
The last section of the Sustainability Report deals with social responsibility. It examines how Heidelberg is looking to prepare its employees for the challenges of the future with a wide range of action plans. Further topics covered include ergonomic operation of Heidelberg products while still ensuring compliance with statutory limits.
