Simon Lee, Senior Research Leader in the Dow Building Solutions business, has received the first Dow Sustainability Innovator Award

Wednesday 06. August 2008 - Simon Lee, Senior Research Leader in the Dow Building Solutions business, has received the first Dow Sustainability Innovator Award.

The Dow Sustainability Innovator Award is a new capstone award, recognizing the outstanding innovations of Dow employees that support Dow’s 2015 Sustainability goals. Winners of this award represent the “best of the best” in sustainability innovation, perseverance, problem-solving, real results on the world stage, and remarkable leadership.

“For us, setting the standard for sustainability has become an essential part of how we do business,” said Neil Hawkins, vice president of sustainability at Dow. “The power of Dow innovation is helping to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges: clean drinking water, energy supplies, public health, renewable feedstocks, and climate change. Because we are inspired by the creativity and solutions our employees at Dow are bringing to these challenges, we created this new award.”

Lee’s contributions to the Dow Building Solutions business and his commitment to the principles of Sustainability make him well deserving to be the first recipient of the Dow Sustainability Innovator Award. “Simon truly exemplifies the spirit of this award,” said Dave Kepler, Executive Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer and Chief Information Officer at Dow. “He has improved and demonstrated the sustainability of STYROFOAM brand insulation by implementing next-generation foaming agent technology that reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the manufacture of one of Dow’s flagship products. This achievement is especially significant as insulation solutions play an increasingly important role in delivering energy efficiency benefits for building and home owners.”

Lee was the lead author of a chapter in the 2006 report for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): “Safeguarding the ozone layer and the global climate system.” The Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 was shared between the IPCC and Al Gore, for their efforts in climate change. For his role as a lead author, the IPCC has officially recognized Lee as a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

He is the only Dow employee to have ever received a Nobel Peace Prize.

“Sustainability has become a business imperative,” said Andrew Liveris, Dow’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Simon has demonstrated how doing great things for the planet also makes business sense — and he brought great honor to Dow as a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.”
