ProImage helps leading Turkish newspapers save cost and improve quality
Monday 14. July 2008 - - colour ink usage reduced by an estimated 19% - improved print quality - 5000 single plates produced at Istanbul plant each day
Hürriyet and Milliyet are two of the largest and most successful newspapers in Turkey.
They have just enhanced their ProImage Newsway production workflow automation solution by adding ProImage On Color ECO ink optimization software, ProImage Ink Control software, and changing from a TIFF to the faster PDF workflow.
Cost savings already include less waste at start-up, less ink usage, and higher productivity.
Eleven different daily newspapers and up to 80 different supplements for these newspapers are printed each day at six different printing plants in Turkey owned by the Dogan Publishing.
For almost ten years both newspapers have enjoyed using ProImage NewsWay software to automate and manage their complex production workflows.
By maintaining the latest version of NewsWay over all these years, the newspapers have benefited from a growing feature-set and the latest state-of-the-art workflow technology.
Now Hürriyet and Milliyet and Hürriyet have again added more capabilities to their NewsWay solutions.
Within their workflow they recently have implemented ProImage OnColor ECO ink optimization software. This not only reduces colour ink consumption and therefore saves money, but also reduces the publishers carbon footprint. After the first two months in use colour ink usage has reduced by an estimated significant 19 percent.
“We have observed the improving quality of printed products since using OnColor ECO,” says Kerem Çetinsaraç, technical manager of Dogan Print Centre, Istanbul plant. “It automatically analyzes PDF files and determines the exact amount of ink needed to produce the best quality, thereby decreasing the C,M,Y content on the page, and replacing the reduced C,M,Y ink with K. This enhances the highlight detail in photographs and reduces set-off due to the use of less ink.”
To further improve quality and manage ink use better, the newspapers have also installed ProImage Ink Control software. This automates the process of sending the correct ink data from each RIPed page pair to the existing PECOM press control system.
At the same time the newspapers have converted from a TIFF to a PDF NewsWay workflow, increasing productivity.
“Page transmission between the editorial site and printing plants is faster with a PDF workflow,” adds Mr. Çetinsaraç. “When we used a TIFF workflow we needed to implement a 90° rotation process for each separation, which means four rotation processes for each colour page. With a PDF workflow we rotate the page during the RIPing process which means only one rotation for each page. This saves time.
“When needed, we can also apply a different RIP curve for each printing plant which further increases quality and consistency.”
Pages are broadcast from editorial sites to each printing plant. An average 5000 single plates using seven Agfa Polaris CTPs are produced at the Istanbul printing plant each day.
Received pages are load-balanced between two Harlequin RIPs and the seven Polaris CTPs that can all be monitored, with status messages displayed, through NewsWay. Pages are then imposed and text and furniture (a digiwedge and two types of vision marks to handle Nela benders) burned on to the final plate image.
In addition there are a total of 15 Agfa platesetters at five different Dogan Printing Centers around Turkey.
Newsway uses a simple web browser. It provides Web based workflow automation using a simple drag-and-drop, and end-to-end integration from editorial front-ends through to press control systems.
