Mohawk Backs Up Carbon Neutral Claims With Emissions Inventory
Monday 23. June 2008 - Continuing its commitment to sustainable practices, Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. has again joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders program, successfully completing EPA base year reporting requirements.
“EPA applauds Mohawk Fine Papers for joining the Climate Leaders program. We look forward to working with them to further reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and protect our environment,” said Robert J. Meyers, Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator of EPAs Office of Air and Radiation.
Mohawk joined the Climate Leaders program in February of 2007 with a pledge to inventory the reduction of its corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To remain a member of the Climate Leaders program, Mohawk submits an annual report of its emissions inventory data to EPA and must pass a required site visit evaluation.
“As senior managers look for ways to build sustainable brands, increasingly they are turning to their supply chain. They want to know about the environmental integrity of products, but also about the companies behind those products,” says Thomas OConnor, Jr., Chairman and CEO, Mohawk Fine Papers. “The certification from EPA substantiates our contribution to greenhouse gas reduction.”
New Sustainability Brochure
Along with this announcement, Mohawk releases Mohawk Fine Papers Commitment to Sustainability, a brochure available online or printed. “Since the early days of my fathers tenure, environmental and social responsibility have been an integral part of Mohawks operations. We have always held ourselves to high ethical standards and are increasingly being recognized by the EPA and environmental NGOs for the work weve done in this arena. This new brochure outlines topics and issues we feel passionate about. We are proud to have been the first in our industry to make coated paper with genuine postconsumer waste, the first to be certified by GreenSeal, the first to support windpower projects through the purchase of renewable energy credits, and the first to produce premium carbon neutral papers,” says OConnor.
Mohawk has earned certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), GreenSeal, and Green-e. It has been recognized by the EPA as Green Power Partner of the Year. “And now we have just completed the EPA Climate Leaders audit. As the noise around green marketing intensifies, third party certifications are an important way to evaluate the integrity of suppliers,” he says.
