Drent Goebel at drupa: Innovation is a Tradition

Tuesday 27. May 2008 - Latest innovations in EB and UV curing

Who definitely needs to visit Drent Goebel at drupa? The answer is flexible packaging printers, folding carton printers and label printers too. Commercial printers who go to Drent Goebel will also be astounded by the versatility of the VSOP presses.

From May 29 to June 11, the centre of the graphic world will be in Germany, Düsseldorf to be exact. This is where drupa 2008 will be taking place. Visitors will find an exciting place with plenty of new developments in hall 16. On their stand C39, Drent Goebel will be showcasing a VSOP 850 with UV and EB curing capabilities.

At drupa, Drent Goebel will be printing on board and on label stock. We will show that we are capable of changing over a complete print order within ten minutes. Visitors will be given the opportunity to assess print quality and to see the benefits that can be achieved in terms of quality, productivity, costs and the environment.

In the past four years, it has become clear that the VSOP surpasses flexo and gravure, creating greater productivity and brilliant print quality on many substrates into the bargain. Over sixty installations in various industries have proven this.

A Drent Goebel drupa solution for quality
The VSOP prints high quality offset, a technology that can compete with gravure on quality. At drupa, Drent Goebel will be showing a 5-color VSOP in an 850 mm web width. The color density of offset in the VSOP is so high that many forms of packaging can be printed in five colors, where flexo would need at least six or seven colors to achieve the desired contrast and color density.

A Drent Goebel drupa solution for time to market
A job changeover will be shown in the course of every demonstration at drupa. A print image and a change of format will be performed. The VSOP will be running at full production. It will then stop, the sleeves will be changed over and production will be fully up and running again within ten minutes, but with a different print image in a different format.

A Drent Goebel drupa solution for costs
Drent Goebel will be showing a calculation model at drupa. Visitors will be able to perform a calculation in line with their own production methods and conditions. The results will be a major revelation to flexo and gravure printers.

A Drent Goebel drupa solution for the environment
Drent Goebel is showing the VSOP without solvents, without distillers, without washers, without storage rooms for solvent-based inks and solvents. A breath of fresh air for man and the environment and a solution that will save costs.

Drent Goebel has successfully proven that the VSOP 850 offset press can produce a pet food bag with UV offset inks, which is within the migration limits set by European legislation.

Given the fact that offset inks do contain certain chemicals, the printer of such flexible packaging products needs to prove to the brand owner that his products are safe, fit for purpose, and do not contaminate the packed goods. The printer needs to clear all risks for the brand owner involved with his printed packaging material.

By being able to present a ‘declaration of compliance’ the printer has a proof that his products do comply with the latest regulations in terms of migration limits. With this declaration of compliance, Drent Goebel is able to support their customers in a way in which the builder of the offset presses has proven that UV / UV inert / EB offset is fit for purpose and must be seriously considered as a viable alternative to gravure and flexo.

A Drent Goebel drupa solution for curing
Drent Goebel is joining forces with Energy Sciences Inc, (ESI), IST METZ UV and Air Liquide. The four companies will show their latest technologies incorporated in Drent Goebel’s VSOP press. ESI and IST will present their latest inventions in respectively EB and UV curing, Air Liquide will supply the nitrogen used for both curing technologies.

The Drent Goebel VSOP on display has a web width of 33 inches and features variable sleeves to allow for fast job changeovers with an infinite range of print repeat lengths. The press provides superior print quality using energy curable offset inks that are cured with either inerted UV or EB technology.

ESI will be showcasing their EZCure EB unit, which was especially developed for the VSOP line of presses. IST Metz installed its new BLK-5 lamp with an inert system on the press. Air Liquide, a world leader in medical and industrial gases, will be demonstrating its state of the art Nitrogen delivery system on the systems as well. Converters in the flexible packaging, folding carton and food packaging industries will be able to see live demonstrations for showcasing the VSOP’s high throughput and high quality while being solvent and VOC free.

During the day, Drent Goebel will show the 5-color VSOP printing on film for wraparound labels, shrink-sleeves and flexible packaging and board for folding cartons.

A Drent Goebel solution for high security printing
Drent Goebel printers are emphasizing that efficiency is one of the key issues in Drent Goebel’s web-fed high security printing. Furthermore, we focus on complete cycle security in our web-fed solutions. A high security printer has to have a system in place to guarantee complete security. In conventional sheet-fed operations much manual handling is involved and repeated steps of counting, which obviously has a much higher failure rate than a continuous closed loop web-solution. No manual counting is necessary any more. An automatic inline counting and verification system with highest redundancy guarantees total security. In a web-fed operation you start with a blank reel of paper going into the machine and completely finished, checked banknotes being delivered directly at the end of the line. Any intervention by personnel is reduced to a minimum. Drent Goebel has been active in the high security market for many years, and now more and more high security printers are aware of the great benefits that web-fed solutions guarantee.

-The art of making history-
At the Drent Goebel booth there will be a special area for displaying some pictures of characteristic old-fashioned Goebel presses. Goebel has a history of over 150 years of building robust German printing machines. The word German in this context is distinctive; who is not impressed by the quality that German machines offer worldwide?
