Monday 04. February 2008 - A successful meeting for Perfumes and Cosmetics packaging experts!

The fourth edition of the PCD congress on cosmetics and perfumes packaging innovation was held on the 22nd and 23rd January 2008 in Paris.

PCD is one of the major events, if not THE major one! PCD is the event for innovation!”Jean-Michel Piron, TEXEN.

This meeting organized by Oriex was attended by over 1200 participants from 32 countries, representing the leading international brands and their packaging suppliers (some sixty exhibitors).

“The right place to meet the decision makers!”Roland Treutlein, EMSChemie GmbH

As in previous editions, the participants discovered the latest packaging developments and launches at the exhibition, a genuine technological showcase, in addition to attending a series of lectures covering major topics linked to innovation in the sector.

“The lectures are top quality, on global state-of-the-art topics. » Jean-
Pierre Massicot , ATT.

Technological transfer, vector for innovations!
Numerous discussions and presentations in the course of this forum highlighted several main ideas, including the need for players in the sector to foster transfers of technology.

“Many major innovations in the cosmetics and perfumes sector spring from the application of technologies initially developed in adjacent fields”recalled Hervé Bouix, Corporate Vice President Packaging New Ventures & Special Projects, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc (USA).

« The transfer of technology is not always an easy approach to implement owing to lasting compartmentalization between different fields. Yet it is absolutely necessary to boost innovation in perfumes and cosmetics » stressed Lorenzo Quaranta from Sandvik.

Packaging and sustainable development : an unavoidable theme !
This was addressed in several papers presenting innovative solutions developed by materials, artwork technologies or machine suppliers. Bormioli Rocco & Figlio Plastic Division, for example, described the trials conducted to develop a new generation of more ecological PE, PET and PPs.

« Far from acting as a brake on innovation, environmental issues are an asset for companies in the sense that they stimulate competitiveness and point to new avenues for packaging development » explained Alain Béthune HBC Packaging Research Director, L’Oréal (France).

This fourth edition of PCD also highlighted the latest developments in mature
technologies and the new possibilities they afford in packaging innovation. This is the case, inter alia, of electro-plating.
« We became interested in this decoration on plastics process long used in the car industry to develop original hues and finishes more in keeping with the universe of cosmetics and perfumes, in an environmentally-friendly approach » commented Gérald Martines, General Manager, RPC Beauté (France). Combining electro-plating, dual injection and overmolding, these latest innovations make it possible, in particular, to obtain special effects like the ones used for Color Fever lipstick by Lancôme, which received a special distinction from the PCD Awards jury.

” Every year, it is the technical seminar for training and meetings among
decision-makers”Marc André Houx, Flexpaq

The solution developed by Alcan in order easily and quickly to develop a plastic mascara brush is another example of noteworthy innovation. « Thanks to this new process, our clients get a functional mock-up that enables them to conduct the first make-up tests just two weeks after the first drawing, instead of the two months required to date » pointed out Nicholas Thome, Director, Innovation & Development for Alcan Packaging Beauty.

PCD Awards 2008 : An exceptional year !
« These prizes reward products placed on the European market between the 1st December 2005 and the 30th November 2007. They stand out owing not only to their esthetic qualities but also the genuine technological breakthrough they represent » specified Noëlle Baticle, Beauty Journalist. « These products provide new useful functions for the consumer in terms of ease-of-use. Their suitability in meeting market needs is reflected in their commercial spin-off » clarified Evelyne Dreyfus, Health- Beauty Journalist.

« The 2008 harvest of PCD Awards is exceptional both in terms of the range of products noted by the jury and the high technological standard of the processes used, to such an extent that the jury members decided to award three special distinctions in addition to the 7 awards » underscored Charles Pileur, Packaging Director, YSL Beauty and member of the PCD Awards Jury. «The fact that PCD will be held every year as of 2009 is perfect in keeping up with the keen pace of packaging innovation in the sector ».

An opinion shared by Véronique Liabeuf, General Manager Enjoy Design : « In
addition to the environment, which will be the central theme, PCD 2009 will focus on the very promising prospects afforded by the development of electronic devices in cosmetics ». Prof. Najet Nagoubi, University Paris-Sud 11 EA 401, IFR 141, Faculty of Pharmacy, Chatenay-Malabry, France, pointed out that « the advent of electro-beauty, micro-institute, raises a certain number of regulatory issues, particularly insofar as their certification is concerned. These challenges will be addressed in detai ».

«PCD has successfully met the challenge of an ideal compromise between
quality speakers and lectures, investment in cost and time and a relaxed atmosphere conducive to fruitful exchanges. Excellent value for money! » Gérard Perrin, Meadwestvaco Calmar

The fifth edition of PCD is being prepared for Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th
