Wednesday 02. January 2008 - Aylesford Newsprint Showcases Recycling SuccessChris White, Commercial Manager for Aylesford Newsprint, recently presented Christine Thomas of Newport City Council with The Local Authority Partnership Award at the first ever Wales Recycling Awards held at the Cylch Community Recycling Network conference in Cardiff.

Although the conference is now in its third year, this was the inaugural awards ceremony to highlight successful recycling and reuse throughout Wales. Aylesford Newsprint, supporters of Cylch (Wales Community Recycling Network) was approached to sponsor the local authority award and was delighted to do so.

“Aylesford is proud to be associated with these awards and congratulates Newport on winning the Local Authority Partnership category,” said Chris White.

“We have worked with community sector recyclers for well over a decade now and experience has shown us that the best quality supplies come from source segregated kerbside collections,” he continued.

This year the Local Authority Partnership Award, sponsored by Aylesford, was won by Newport City Council, with Blaneau Gwent County Borough Council and the City and Council of Swansea close runners up.

Steve Davidson of Newport City Council said: “We are very pleased to receive this recognition for the productive relationship developed between the council’s Waste Management Department and Wastesavers over the past 11 years. This year Newport will almost certainly hit a 36% recycling and composting rate, making us the premier recycling city in Wales. It shows what can be achieved when we all work together.”

Paul Jones of Wastesavers said: “It is really pleasing to get recognition for the way in which we work in partnership with the council, as well as the recycling rates Newport has achieved. Special thanks must also go to the people of Newport. Without their cooperation Newport would not be where it is today – at the forefront of recycling in Wales.”

Cylch is an umbrella support organisation that represents the interests of Wales-based community sector organisations engaged in recycling or reuse. Cylch members employ 652 full-time staff across Wales in twenty local authority areas, operating activities ranging from kerbside recycling to community compost schemes.
