Druckwerkstatt in Vienna: The best investment ever
Thursday 07. October 2021 - Thanks to consistent automation, the Vienna print shop has written an incredible success story in recent years. Digital cutting technology from Zünd also plays a central role in this. Soon a second Zünd S3 cutter will go into operation.
On the wall in his office, Robert Bincik has a quote from Thomas Alva Edison in large letters that always reminds him of his company credo: “If there is a way to make something better: Find it!”. And that is exactly what the managing director of Druckwerkstatt in Vienna has done over the past 17 years. He has developed the company into a full-service provider for printing and packaging.
However, things could have turned out differently. He was on the verge of quitting his job as operations manager of a printing company and turning his back on the graphic arts industry. But his former customers kept pestering him with print-related enquiries. And so he remained in the industry as a producer and print broker. “With the growing volume of orders, we had no choice but to get into production ourselves.”
In the meantime, the 20-strong team handles around 12,000 orders a year and covers all process steps in-house except offset printing. This is why the company name was changed in the spring, explains the boss: “Over the years we have grown to become one of the most innovative printing companies in Austria. Above all, the packaging sector of small and special series with print finishing is one of our greatest strengths. We are taking this into account with the new name Druckwerkstatt Print & Packaging.”
12,000 orders per year
Another key to growth is the high level of automation that runs through all areas of production. “Automation is my absolute hobbyhorse. This is the only way we have managed to increase our annual order volume by 30 per cent to 12,000 orders – with the same number of employees,” says Bincik. He cites the digital cutting technology from Switzerland as an example: “The Zünd S3 Cutter is the best solution I have ever invested in. The cutter gives the print shop incredible flexibility with a high degree of automation. Before it was put into operation, the company had to buy in around 600 punches per year. “This is not just a cost issue. Handling the punches caused an enormous internal effort,” Bincik points out. In addition, he also appreciates the flexible use of a wide variety of tools, which means that the cutter can be adapted to current requirements at any time. “The modularity inherent in the Zünd cutter is ingenious for me. It allows us to grow with the demands of the market.”
Massive growth in packaging
One relevant segment that the company is currently pushing is short-run folding carton production. They have set up their own homepage for this with www.yourbox.at. Bincik explains that they realised that there were hardly any suppliers on the market who could produce folding cartons in short and medium runs (1,000 to 1,500 units) quickly and cost-effectively: “We have experienced massive growth in this area and here, too, the Zünd cutter helps us to process a wide range of substrates quickly and precisely.
To make the most of the cutter’s productivity, the print shop has automated the sheet feed with a Sheet Feeder from Zünd. In this configuration the S3 cutter is now in operation at the print workshop around the clock and works in one shift completely without supervision. In view of this resounding success, Robert Bincik is already thinking hard about investing in another Zünd cutter.
