Students Dive into Specialty Printing at SGIA Headquarters

Tuesday 27. January 2015 - Local technology institute uses annual field trip to enrich their education

On Tuesday, January 13, Monroe Technology Center (Leesburg, Virginia) came back to SGIA Headquarters with a fresh batch of first-year students to get insider access into the world of screen printing.
Johnny Shell, SGIA’s Vice President of Technical Services began the day with a detailed presentation about the history of screen printing before diving into the different kinds of mesh and how to expose and coat screens. Next, students got the chance to try their hand at printing T-shirts with various designs and high-level techniques.
“This field trip to SGIA gives students the chance to pair the knowledge they’ve obtained in the classroom with professional applications and printing techniques,” said Ashley Arneson, SGIA’s Associate Manager of Education. “It provides them with a thorough, well-rounded experience.”
The day wrapped up with an in-depth look at wide-format printing presented by Ray Weiss, SGIA’s Digital Imaging Specialist. “[Visiting SGIA] has presented the students a wonderful opportunity,” said Pam Smith, Graphic Communications instructor at Monroe Technology Center. “In class we present theory; here, with the hands-on demonstrations, it clicks.”
