MediaOne of Utah Announces Changes to The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News Joint Operating Agreement
Friday 25. October 2013 - Each Newspaper to Maintain Independent Ownership and Editorial Control
MediaOne, a printing, delivery and advertising company jointly owned by The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News, today announced revisions to the joint operating agreement between the two daily newspapers.
As part of the revised agreement, the Deseret News will purchase the printing facilities and real estate of the partnership. According to Brent Low, president and chief executive officer of MediaOne, ownership and control of each newspaper will remain unchanged and both publishers will maintain total independence and editorial separation of their respective newspapers.
The digital businesses for The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News will be operated separately by each newspaper, outside of the joint operating agreement.
MediaOne was incorporated in 1952 by the two daily newspapers and the original joint operating agreement was drafted at that time. The details of the agreement included sharing of expenses for publishing, advertising and circulation by both newspapers.
Salt Lake City is one of the last designated marketing areas to have two major competing newspapers, a distinction both newspapers are committed to maintaining.
“We are pleased with the investment decision by the Deseret News,” said Low. “We are also pleased that this allows two distinct editorial voices to continue to have maximum reach for our advertising clients.”
