The New York Times News Service & Syndicate Debuts New Site for Online Access to Expansive Photo Archive for Editorial Use
Friday 05. October 2012 - Photo Archive Available to Editors and Researchers for Browsing, Purchases and Immediate Downloads
The New York Times News Service & Syndicate debuts today a landing page that provides to editors and researchers new online access to its vast archive of New York Times photos. Beginning with more than 3,000 images, users will be able to turn to NYTSyn.com/Archives to browse, purchase and download images for editorial use.
The new landing page displays a lead image that reflects either a historic perspective of a topic currently in the news or a timeless feature. Below this image, thumbnails offer quick links to categories including World News, U.S. News, Business/Finance, Lifestyle, Science and Circuits, and Sports.
Users can browse photos within these categories or use the search function to locate photos related to a desired topic or subject. Results can be narrowed down by filters including date range, keywords and photographer. Browsing is free of charge, and editors and researchers can use their registered accounts to purchase and download images directly.
NYTSyn.com/Archives will also feature special collections curated by editors of The New York Times News Service. These collections, which will be updated regularly, offer photo essays of topics such as performances, featuring a broad spectrum of images from Frank Sinatra and Count Basie to Barbra Streisand and Jimi Hendrix, and transportation, highlighting historical pictures of aircraft and other modes.
In addition to the photos available at launch, The New York Times News Service & Syndicate will make more photos available from The Times’s archive at NYTSyn.com/Archives over time.
The New York Times picture library contains an estimated five to six million prints and contact sheets, at least 10 million frames of negatives and 13,500 DVDs, each storing about 4.7 gigabytes worth of imagery.
Content provided by The New York Times News Service & Syndicate is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A registered account includes full access to the latest articles, commentary, images, videos and multimedia from The New York Times.
