Ricoh’s Flagship Press Produces John Cleese Charity Artbook

Thursday 28. April 2011 - Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition production printing powerhouse delivers high-art print results

Ricoh UK is participating in an exciting artistic project featuring the latest book supported by actor and comedian, John Cleese. The Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition digital colour press has been chosen to print the photography book, titled JW2 with all profits going to charity Mencap.
The book documents sculptor Jonathan Wylder creating a collection of statues, ranging from bust to life-sized, of his muse, Jennifer Wade. The sculpting process is captured with stunning imagery from photographer Christopher Bissell, and includes text of John Cleese interviewing Wylder about the creative process. All profits from the sale of the book, priced at £195, will go to Mencap, a charity that supports people with learning disabilities.
The Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition was selected to print the book due to its excellent colour quality and sharp dot reproduction. Its PXP toner, combined with oil-less fusion technology, ensures consistent offset-like quality, smoother shading, and improved colour registration. Producing a wide range of colours, the Ricoh Pro C901 achieves consistent coverage in high-colour areas, while photo rendering is exceptionally accurate with consistent and repeatable colours.
“For the Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition to be identified as the press of choice for such a prestigious artistic and photographic project confirms the performance of this highly versatile system,” states Stephen Palmer, Production Print Director, Ricoh UK. “Because the Ricoh Pro C901 can use a variety of paper grades – even those designed for offset printing – the book has been printed using a range of eye-catching paper stock, creating a truly stand-out publication.”
Ricoh partnered with a range of suppliers to create the book:
Favini: the book’s cover is printed on Favini Majestic Medal Bronze 120gsm, while the text is printed on the highly tactile Favini Dolce Vita 200gsm.
Kernow Coatings: supplied the translucent sheet, Hydroprint Light Frost 120 micron after the cover.
Butler Tanner & Dennis: to bind the book, Butler Tanner & Dennis combined traditional methods with state-of-the-art technology, and used a screw and post binding, complete with brass coloured fixings.
The 70 page, 300mm x 340mm publication includes 66 illustrated pages of 200 photographs and four pages of text. The limited edition run of 1000 books will be printed on demand. Copies were available to view at an invitation-only launch event on 27th April at The Dome at the V&A Museum, London, and afterwards are available through the Osborne Studio Gallery, Motcomb Street, London.
