New brand Purolan for products for the cosmetics industry
Wednesday 23. March 2011 - Pure quality from LANXESS Distribution
LANXESS Distribution GmbH, Langenfeld, Germany, is bringing all its raw materials for the manufacture of cosmetics products under a single umbrella brand. The subsidiary of specialty chemicals group LANXESS will market these products throughout the world with immediate effect under the new name Purolan. They include various isoparaffins, phenoxyethanol, monopropylene glycol, benzyl alcohol, Vulkanox BHT Food Grade and the diols pentanediol and octanediol.
The syllable “Pur” in Purolan alludes strongly to the high quality of the ranges supplied to the cosmetics sector while the ending “lan” highlights the link to LANXESS. “We have created this new brand to more strongly showcase our premium products in the market,” said Michael Bader, Head of Personal Care at LANXESS Distribution GmbH. “In contrast to many other trade products that are used as commodities in the chemical industry, our raw materials are particularly suitable for the cosmetics sector owing to their purity.”
Isoparaffins such as the isohexadecane Purolan IHD are used in the cosmetics industry as spreading agents among other applications, and can serve as a substitute for poorly biodegradable silicones, for example. The outstanding feature of these aromatic-free products marketed by LANXESS Distribution GmbH is their high purity.
The phenoxyethanol Purolan PE is a particularly suitable preservative for use in decorative cosmetics, lotions and shower gels.
The multivalent alcohols Purolan PD (pentane diol) and Purolan OD (octane diol) are used for a variety of purposes in cosmetics. They improve the skin feel of cosmetic formulations owing to their moisturizing properties. In addition, these products can be used either alone or in combination with other preservatives to combat microorganisms directly and thus reduce or eliminate body odor, acne or mycoses, for example.
The monopropylene glycol Purolan MPG serves as a humectant in many hygiene articles, such as skin creams, toothpastes and deodorants. It can significantly improve the solubility of various substances, thereby facilitating more stable dispersion. Monopropylene glycol, for example, acts as a substrate and carrier solvent for dyes in the production of mascara.
The benzyl alcohol Purolan BA is used primarily as a fragrance and flavoring.
Antioxidants such as Purolan BHT, which is well established under its previous name Vulkanox BHT Food Grade, are used in cosmetics to stabilize oils and fatty acids and prevent the products from becoming rancid.
