NewsLiner A with CoLiner – The Economic Solution for Growing Requirements in the Inserting Area

Thursday 10. February 2011 - Kieler Zeitung GmbH & Co. Offsetdruck KG Expands Inserting Capacities

Kieler Zeitung GmbH & Co. Offsetdruck KG, based in Kiel, Northern Germany, has become the world’s first printing house to couple an existing NewsLiner A newspaper inserting system with a CoLiner pre-gathering unit from Muller Martini. “For us, this is a quick and cost-effective solution to tackle growing requirements in the inserting area,” says Sven Fricke, Head of the Printing and Logistics Center.
Two and a half years ago, Kieler Zeitung GmbH & Co. Offsetdruck KG, which produces numerous advertising journals alongside the “Kieler Nachrichten” paper, was the first newspaper manufacturer in the world to opt for the newly launched ProLiner with CoLiner combination inserting system, unveiled at the drupa trade fair in 2008. “Since that initial investment, the number of inserts and pre-printed sections to be added has risen by 23 percent,” says Sven Fricke. “What’s more, the number of insertion combinations per order has also grown, thereby increasing the amount of small units.”
Economic Solution without Expanding the Existing Space
Positive experiences with the CoLiner were key to the Kieler Nachrichten paper’s decision to opt for another Muller Martini machine, in this instance a pre-gathering system, when expanding its inserting capacities. According to Sven Fricke, the fact that Muller Martini could offer the option of expanding the existing NewsLiner A inserting system with the CoLiner played a crucial role in the decision. The ten-station CoLiner is docked onto the side of one of the three existing five-station NewsLiner A machines, commissioned back in 2002.
Not only does this offer flexibility in terms of the layout of the entire inserting system without the need to expand the space already available, it also provides an optimum overview of the process for the machine operator. In order to produce newspapers with numerous inserts, Kieler Zeitung GmbH & Co. Offsetdruck KG previously had to either run the NewsLiner A twice or adopt a pre-inserting method. The new solution allows the printing house to use an in-line production process, which is much more efficient and therefore much more cost-effective.
ValueLiner for Advertising on Front Pages
The Kieler Nachrichten paper will put the new CoLiner into operation in mid-2011. As early as the first quarter of this year, the ProLiner inserting system will be retrofitted with a ValueLiner card gluer. The printing house in Northern Germany will therefore be in a position to respond to the growing demand from its advertisers for adverts on the front pages of its daily and weekly newspapers.
